General Accountability
The MaRS Discovery District is seeking an Associate, Social Entrepreneurship, reporting to the Director, Social Entrepreneurship, SiG@MaRS. The Associate will support the advisory practice in assisting new and emerging social entrepreneurs refine, launch and scale their innovative venture ideas that make money and achieve social impact, ultimately creating transformative social change. S/he will also contribute to the development of Social Innovation Generation @ MaRS (SiG@MaRS) – a node in the national network linking MaRS, the McConnell Family Foundation, the University of Waterloo and PLAN in Vancouver.
The Associate will have the unique opportunity to learn about an exciting and growing sector by supporting SiG@MaRS administratively through database management, meeting coordination and screening clients, as well as contribute to project management, program reporting and events. This role is ideal for those seeking a learning opportunity, eager to jump into a dynamic organization and able to contribute to projects as needed.
Key Job Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will leverage MaRS’ expertise and networks in supporting emerging social entrepreneurs.
Responsibilities include:
- Responding to inquiries from existing and prospective social entrepreneurs and people interested in learning about SiG and MaRS
- Screening of new client applicants by phone or online research
- Participating in new client intake meetings
- Scheduling and coordinating meetings between clients and advisors; and coordinating contact between volunteer advisors, service providers and clients
- Supporting advisors by conducting pre-meeting research on social ventures and networks and assisting advisors by providing post-meeting follow-up and client surveys
- Maintaining and managing SiG@MaRS records in Jive and SalesForce
- Representing SiG on MaRS database committee
- Managing the SiG@MaRS resource library
- Leading SiG quarterly reporting requirements
- Providing event support
- Researching and writing, including blogging and use of other social media
- Network liaison
- Other duties as assigned

Educational/Technical Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in related field, business and/or social sciences
- Professional experience, either in social sector (non-profit) or business (for-profit)
- Awareness of and deep interest in social entrepreneurship
- Ability to work both independently and in teams
- Strong communications skills, both oral and written
- Attention to detail
- Experience with Salesforce or managing similar database
