Based on a highly successful model from the United Kingdom, the School for Social Entrepreneurs-Ontario (SSE-O) is an innovative educational and entrepreneurial program that provides action-based learning and skill development for entrepreneurs attempting to launch their own social venture. The year-long program is directed toward students from a diversity of economic, social, educational, and business backgrounds with a broad range of perspectives. The objective of the SSE-O is to provide the skills, experience, and opportunities that enable people to use their creative and entrepreneurial potential more fully for social benefit in their communities, and to contribute to a new model for prosperity in Ontario. SSE-O is a collaborative initiative led by Housing Services Corporation (HSC), Social Innovation Generation at MaRS (SiG@MaRS), ACCESS Community Capital Fund (ACCESS), and Toronto Centre for Community Learning & Development (TCCLD).
The Learning Manager (LM) coordinates a high quality learning program for social entrepreneurs that supports their personal development as leaders of change and enables them to develop a practical project with social benefits. Working closely with the Director, the LM is responsible for the learning program in Toronto and other communities across Ontario as the School expands. This is a key organizational position offering an opportunity to innovate and design a cutting-edge curriculum. Some travel within the province will be required. Please note that in keeping with HSC’s role as an incubator for the SSE-O, the person hired for the position will be an employee of HSC.
Position Summary |
Responsibilities:
- Work with the Director to recruit social entrepreneurs as well as volunteers, including interviewing prospective individuals, contributing to publicizing SSE-O’s programs, and undertaking outreach to ensure a diverse SSE-O community;
- Develop, adapt and roll out the action-based, practitioner-led and highly applied learning program in Toronto and two other communities in Ontario;
- Create an exciting and secure learning environment, facilitating and chairing learning sessions with a diverse cohort of social entrepreneurs;
- Run action learning sets for social entrepreneurs;
- Facilitate students’ progress on their projects and encourage striving for new levels of personal development;
- Develop and nurture SSE-O’s pool of speakers, mentors and witnesses, providing appropriate briefings, and follow-up to sustain their commitment to the SSE-O;
- Manage volunteers and consultants, including witnesses, expert professionals and mentors;
- With the Director, actively participate in an impact and quality evaluation process;
- Provide thought leadership on social entrepreneurship through occasional speaking engagements, presentations, blogs, and other Internet postings; and,
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Experienc:
- A proven track record of designing and delivering effective group learning and support programs and producing demonstrable outcomes;
- Experience with Action Learning;
- Experience helping develop a project, organization or business in the areas of community development, economic development, or social entrepreneurship preferred;
- Experience working successfully with diverse communities and people.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge and understanding of adult learning models;
- Excellent relationship building and communication skills;
- Project management skills;
- A demonstrable ability to foster effective teamwork and coordinated pursuit of a goal;
- An ability to work with people and networks in business, the public sector, and the community sector; and
- Negotiation skills.
