Who We Need
Have you got a passion and energy for poverty reduction, community economic development and
social justice? Do you love to engage and activate people around these issues in a meaningful
way? Aside from being able to provide strong administrative support to this work you have some
experience and potential in policy development, community engagement and communications.
Introduction:

Responsibility:
The Communications and Administrative Coordinator of Government Relations will report to the
Manager of Government Relations. The position provides executive level administrative support to
the Manager of Government Relations; provides community engagement, policy and political liaison
support; and coordinates the communications of the Government Relations program and Action to
End Poverty in Alberta

Accountabilities:
This position will provide support to the Government Relations program and Action to End Poverty
in Alberta in the following areas:
1. Well coordinated activities, meetings and documentation.
2. High level of community awareness and engagement.
3. Effective policy development and political liaison.
4. Up-to-date, professional and credible communications.
Outcomes and Indicators
Administrative Coordination
Indicators of success:
- 100% of reports and proposals are submitted on time.
- Meeting agendas and minutes are accurate and distributed in a timely fashion.
Outcomes:
- Manager is able to fulfil his role and meet their goals.
- Momentum’s Government Relations program is highly organized.
- Coordinate the administrative details involved in projects, events, etc.
- Schedule and coordinate meetings.
- Draft and distribute meeting minutes.
- Track tasks with deadlines to ensure they are completed on time.
- Make travel arrangements as required.
- Manage incoming and outgoing mail.
- Prepare expense claims, and other regular forms for the Manager.
- Maintain Government Relations Program files.
Community Engagement
Indicators of success:
- Momentum is recognized and frequently referred to as a player in government relations work related to low-income
Albertans and those organizations that work with them.
Outcome:
- Stakeholders and partners are engaged in government relations work related to low-income Albertans.
- Identify outreach and education opportunities related to poverty reduction and community economic development (CED).
- Participate in related seminars, discussions and briefings on behalf of Momentum, and in conjunction with other internal and external
partners as appropriate.
- Initiate contact with relevant stakeholders, including poverty reduction and community economic development (CED) organizations, the
business sector and academia, as appropriate.
Policy & Political Support
Indicators of success:
- The adoption of new or improved provincial and municipal social policies that reduces poverty and improves the
quality of life for vulnerable Albertans.
Outcomes:
- Poverty reduction strategies at the provincial and municipal levels are comprehensive and integrated by 2014.
- Greater buy in across the province for the work of the FCSS Sustainability Forum.
- Support the GR Manager’s liaison with elected officials, government staff, and counterparts from other community organizations.
- Represent the GR Manager at relevant meetings, briefings, events, and other policy venues, from time to time.
- Input into efforts to formulate, implement, and/or track policy initiatives.
- Perform research on topics of relevance to the Manager’s role and Government Relations Program.
- Obtain and verify data and statistics.
Communications
Indicators of success:
- Action to End Poverty in Alberta social media sites updated weekly.
- 100% of communications are high quality and professionally prepared.
Outcome:
- Stakeholders and partners recognize Momentum’s Government Relations Program and Action to End Poverty in
Alberta as professional and credible.
- Compose drafts and finished documents of a considerable variety (letters, presentations, funder reports, etc.) from verbal or written
instructions for the Manager.
- Prepare reports where the information is gathered from several sources.
- Edit and proofread written documents.
- Act as co-administrator for the AEPA facebook page, website and twitter account.
- Other social media responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications, Experience & Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree with focus on government relations, social policy, public administration and/or communication.
- Ability to think critically and act strategically.
- Excellent organizational, coordination, and planning skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of office procedures, including records management, electronic mail and calendar software applications, meeting and event coordination.
- Ability to work well with a wide range of people and entities, across sectors.
- Personal integrity and good judgment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills: ability to manage multiple priorities in an outcomes-based environment to deliver results.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Experience in working with marginalized or barriered individuals, including multicultural sensitivity and awareness.
- High level of expertise in computer software applications: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe (using PDFs), using internet and email, web design/maintenance software.
- Experience with social media including Facebook and Twitter.
- Knowledge of poverty reduction and community economic development (CED) an asset.
- Flexibility to infrequently travel provincially and domestically as needed.
