Women’s leadership - and particularly that of Indigenous women in Canada - is a strong focus for the Coady Institute’s work. In recognition of its firm commitment to advancing women’s social, political and economic empowerment, the Coady Institute launched the International Centre for Women’s Leadership in 2011. The Centre currently manages five women’s leadership programs which include Indigenous women from Canada and abroad. One of these programs is the flagship Indigenous Women in Community Leadership program, benefitting First Nations, Métis and Inuit women across Canada. The Centre is also engaged in a number of research initiatives which enhance the curriculum as well as contribute to community-based development activities in respective fields.
As an Indigenous Women’s Leadership and Community Development Specialist, the successful candidate will play a key curriculum development, research and teaching role and will have:
Requirements:
- Knowledge of and extensive experience working with Indigenous communities in Canada;
- Five plus years’ experience and expertise related to women’s leadership and community development experience and expertise in women’s economic empowerment;
- Knowledge of and experience with adult education theory and methodologies, facilitation and building new knowledge through research initiatives;
- Knowledge of gender and power relations
- Capacity for networking and managing collaborative partnerships;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and organizational skills;
- Strong research, analytical and writing skills;
- A Master’s degree in a related area of study or equivalent (PhD is an asset);
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment while ensuring that outcomes are met;
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally;
- A strong proficiency in a First Nation language would be an asset in this position.
Responsibilities:
- Lead on and off-campus educational programs including; having lead role in facilitation of programs, develop curricula and conduct research initiatives on Indigenous leadership/empowerment, community development, gender and power analysis;
- Oversee mentorship and participant community placement projects for relevant programs;
- Contribute to donor reports as required;
- Contribute to the life of Coady and Coady programs as a mentor, advisor and colleague.
This position is a full time position located at the Coady International Institute on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with potential for travel within North America and overseas. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of the StFX AUT Collective Agreement. Rank and Salary will be commensurate with applicant’s qualifications and experience.
