About the Centre for Social Innovation
The Centre for Social Innovation is a nonprofit social enterprise with a mission to catalyze, inspire and support new ideas that are making positive change in the world. We provide shared space and services to over 850 social mission groups, acts as a community centre for social innovators, and helps to launch new entrepreneurial and collaborative projects.
We currently operate four locations in Toronto (two locations on Spadina, Annex and Regent Park) as well as a location in New York City. Our growth strategy is ambitious with no less than global impact in our sights. About the Centre for Social Innovation’s Finance Manager/Controller
We need a Finance Manager/Controller who can help us to continue to enhance our finance and accounting systems in Toronto and New York while based in Toronto. Our activities and different incorporations span the business, non-profit and charitable sector. We are looking for a unique individual that can understand and balance these activities in a fast paced environment while also being excited to be part of a vibrant, chaotic and inspiring community. Our Finance Manager/Controller will help to crate a solid platform and systems on which we can build new transformative projects and programs - whether it be for community bonds, micro loans, fund development and anything else we dream up all the while, keeping the boat on course and giving us the confidence and steady rudder that enables innovators to thrive.
More concretely you will be responsible to plan, organize, and manage the functions of the Finance department, ensuring effective and efficient management of all aspects of accounting, payroll, reporting and analysis, tax returns filing, cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting and audit processes. You will also be responsible for through timely and accurate reporting, sound financial analysis, maintaining and improving CSI’s accounting systems, principles, practices and procedures, implementing efficient processes and good internal controls, and managing staff, ensure proper management of CSI’s financial resources and comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
This position will lead the Finance and Accounts team (Assistant Accounts Manager and Accounts Assistant) and will report to the Director of Finance and Operations. The Finance team is based at our Spadina location but the Finance Manager/Controller will occasionally be required to work from other locations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management:
- Supervises the daily operations of the Finance department, including the maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, loan payments, payroll and fundraising activities by approving journal entries, reviewing accounts, preparing supporting documentation and schedules.
- Manages the financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting process.
- Oversees the month-end accounting close process ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of recording and reporting of financial information in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
- Reviews all bank reconciliations and balance sheet accounts analysis.
- Manages cash flow ensuring sufficient funds at bank to meet daily operations.
- Prepares annual charity returns for operations in Canada and the US.
- Capital project tracking and reporting.
- Prepares HST returns.
- Reviews EHT Annual Return, WSIB Annual Reconciliation and T4s distribution.
- Oversees the approval process of payables and reviews cheque runs, electronic fund transfer and wire payments for accuracy and completeness.
- Leads all external audit activity and provides all required information.
- Ensures all contract deliverables of a financial nature are met.
- Monitors the maintenance of an accurate asset management inventory database.
- Manages organization's loans (community bonds) and reserve funds in accordance with Board policies.
Supervision:
- Leads, motivates, and develops the Finance staff, including hiring, orientation, promotion, assigning work and projects, providing guidance, support, direction, training and development, monitoring workloads, evaluating performance, resolving issues and handling disciplinary matters.
- Leads team meetings to discuss issues and set goals and strategies to meet them.
Budget Administration:
- Participates in the development and implementation of the annual budget and forecasts for programs and departments, including distribution of budget templates, guidelines and schedules to managers; compilation and analysis of information for senior management.
- Prepares funder expense reports in accordance with instructions provided.
Payroll:
- Oversees the provision of payroll services (supported by a payroll service provider), including transfers sources deductions (tax, CPP, EI and EHT), and related benefit remittances, ensures that appropriate controls and reconciliation processes are in place and all legal requirements are met in a timely fashion.
Reporting and Analysis:
- Provides complete and accurate financial reporting packages to the management team, Finance Committee and Board of Directors on a timely basis including income statement, balance sheet, cash flow projections, budget performance analysis, balance account reconciliations and recommendations of corrective actions.
- Prepares and submits periodic financial reports to funders to ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with program budgets throughout the funding period.
Controls:
- Ensures adherence of Organization practices with legislative requirements, and develops, implements and maintains sound policies, procedures, processes, and tools to ensure that appropriate internal controls are in place.
- Maintains Finance Policies and Procedure documentation.
- Interfaces with internal customers, funders, other agencies, external service providers and contractors to identify ways to streamline processes and improve efficiency in financial and operational systems.
Facilities and Support:
- Administrates accounting system, including troubleshooting, assessing needs and recommending solutions.
- Works closely with management teams to provide support, advice, and recommendations on financial and operational matters.
- Provides back-up support to the Director of Finance and Operations as required.
- Manages special projects as assigned.
- Performs other tasks as required.
Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business or related field combined with a recognized accounting designation (i.e. CPA, CGA, CMA, CA).
- Minimum eight years’ accounting and finance experience, with four years at management level, is essential (not-for-profit expertise an asset).
- Extensive experience with QuickBooks accounting software
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), time attendance and payroll systems, etc.
- Experience managing team
- In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, concepts and best practices.
- Knowledge of reporting requirements of a 501c3 is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to compile, analyze, interpret, and present complex financial reports, statements, and/or projections to a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to organize and prioritize in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, initiative and a high degree of confidentiality.
- Familiarity with – and keen interest in – Toronto’s social mission sector
- A low-stress attitude in a complex environment. A sense of humour helps a lot!
