ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a member of the leadership team reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Learning Programs provides leadership in the development of strategy to address the training needs of the non-profit sector.

Through the development of sector relationships, consultation with stakeholders and utilization of the knowledge of teammates, they guide the focus of program development. The Director of Learning Programs, utilizes a deep understanding of adult education to develop and facilitate programs and to guide others in the development and facilitation of programs outside their area of expertise.

The Director of Learning may lead the outsourcing of some program development and delivery where it is outside the organizations area of expertise or excess capacity is required. 

Learning Program Responsibilities:

  • Design, development and documentation of all in-house learning programs at CSCNS;
  • Pedagogical, curricular and learning content design;
  • Ensure programs meet the needs of a diverse audience and recognize diversity and equity topics in the programing;
  • Ensure pedagogy is culturally responsive and adapted where required on an ongoing basis;
  • Facilitation of programs;
  • Program administration with support from the Operations Coordinator;
  • Develop online learning programs are consistent with the expectations of funders and needs of clients and
  • have the ability to meet the needs of diverse audiences;
  • Facilitate programs throughout Nova Scotia and ensure evaluation of outcomes and impacts in consistently
  • done;
  • Supervision for programs designed or facilitated by the Human Resources Consultant/Program Developer;
  • Oversight of custom learning for CSCNS including client engagement and sales development, CRM and client management systems used for proposal and contract development, customized program development, program design and delivery, and client follow-up, program documentation and reporting;
  • Develop and host any webinars, online learning or other formats of learning programs;
  • Evaluate programs, measure and track results, providing reports to leadership team; and
  • Vendor selection, oversight and management for outsourced programs.

Strategic Planning Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the leadership team for CSCNS you participate in the strategic planning activities for the organization;
  • Advise the Executive Director on organizational capabilities regarding program development that may impact strategy;
  • Gather and provide information to the Executive Director and the Board regarding sector needs based on consultations, experience and participation in events with stakeholders;
  • Advise the leadership team and board of advances in technology for learning programs that may impact the CSCNS ability to deliver programs in a competitive way;
  • Devise the strategy for the learning activities for the organization including development of on-line learning opportunities;
  • Prepare and carry out implementation plans for bringing programs to clients; and
  • Bring strategies for on-line programing to completion.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct leadership for the Human Resource Consultant/Program Developer;
  • Develop and manage aspects of the budget that relate to learning programs and strategic directors, exercise fiduciary responsibilities and accountabilities for funds, assist with reports to funders regularly 
  • Manage trainers and vendors providing services to CSCNS; and
  • Mentor other team members as required in adult education.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • The successful candidate will possess a Masters in Adult Education or related field;
  • 5 + years of relevant experience developing and delivering adult education programs; and
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Transformative adult education – theory, design and facilitation skills;
  • An in depth understanding of diversity requirements for educational programs;
  • The ability to ensure diversity is considered in all program content development;
  • A thorough understanding/grounding in the core competencies of nonprofit and community organizational management and planning e.g. board governance, strategic planning, financial sustainability, HR and leadership, strategic communications, etc.;
  • Small event planning;
  • Networking and systems thinking;
  • Highly organized;
  • Knowledge of and experience with online training methodology;
  • Skilled communicator and effective public speaking, facilitation, and presentation skills;
  • Established ability to leverage innovative technologies to support deliverables;
  • Ability to manage and influence in a virtual organization;
  • A demonstrated interest in working with the nonprofit sector;
  • Awareness of opportunities and challenges related to the mission of the organization;
  • Experience developing training programs would be an asset; and
  • Understanding of Office 365 including word, excel and power point and other relevant software.

Reports to: Executive Director Supervises: Human Resource Consultant/Program Developer

  • Staff from various levels of government including Municipal, Provincial and Federal
  • Stakeholders from member organizations and other nonprofit and voluntary sector leaders
  • Colleagues from national organizations supporting non-profits
  • Political members from all levels of government
  • Board of Directors

WORKING CONDITIONS

The location of the Director of Learning is flexible but they must be able to attend meetings in Halifax on a regular basis. The Director of Learning is expected to maintain standard office hours with occasional evenings and weekends, as required, to accommodate meetings and/or training. The position requires travel around Nova Scotia.

COMPENSATION

The starting salary for the successful candidate will be commensurate with education and experience, to an initial annual maximum of $50,000 - $70,000 (to be confirmed). The compensation package includes cost-shared medical and dental benefits.

The successful incumbent is skilled working in a virtual environment and understands the opportunities and challenges of successfully delivering on strategic and operational goals in a complex environment.
