Community Garden Assistant - Green Team Position

Work Terms

Hours: Up to 22 hours per week starting April 27th to August 21, 2011.

Wage: $10-13 per hour depending on experience, and program funding.


Job posting open to 16-24 yrs of age only. Must be physically able to perform duties below:
 

Main Job Duties:

  • Support community gardening and greening in the Spence Neighbourhood through:
  • Working with SNA Greening Coordinator and community members to plan, maintain, and improve on neighbourhood image, community gardens and green spaces in area.
  • Assist SNA Greening Coordinator with workshops on related skills, and encouraging community members to contribute their own knowledge.
  • Demonstrate and contribute to practices such as recycling, composting and other long term beneficial environmental projects.
  • Assisting in organizing community and garden related activities and events including coordinating volunteers.
  • Assist with programming in the SNA Kids Garden.
  • Other outdoor maintenance work as needed.
  • Record Keeping of Activities-photos, monthly reports, etc.
  • Supervising and providing work experience for up to four “First Job 4 Youth” participants aged 16-18 from July-August 2011.

Assets:

  • Experience with community gardening, or landscaping, community programming/organizing, composting and horticulture.
  • Supervisory experience and mentoring of youth of all ages.
  • Preference given to demonstrated knowledge of inner city issues and hands on experience.
  • Excellent in oral and written communication skills-including languages other than English.
  • Can work individually as well as cooperatively with others.
  • Knowledge of common plants, organic gardening, and a willingness to learn.
