POSITION SUMMARY
The John Howard Society of Manitoba (JHS), a non-profit, community justice agency, has an opening for a Literacy Assistant. JHS runs a literacy program for the inmates of the Winnipeg Remand Centre, as well as a drop-in literacy program for people in the community. Reporting to the Literacy Coordinator and to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will become part of our literacy team.
This is a half time position (18.75 hours per week), year-round. John Howard Society’s office hours are generally Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30; however the literacy program also offers some evening programming. Successful candidate must be willing to work flexible hours. JHS is a unionized workplace.
Wage and terms: $15.30 per hour, 18.75 hours per week.
Start date: May 9, 2011
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Keep statistics on volunteer hours and other activities;
- Organizing regular volunteer training events;
- Provide support to volunteers through weekly correspondence to track learner progress and volunteer needs;
- Perform weekly check-ins with students who are being tutored;
- Mark workbooks and update student files;
- Help maintain literacy library and resource files;
- Assist with literacy newsletter;
- Attend agency staff meetings and other agency functions and events; and
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience;
- Experience working with criminalized people is an asset;
- Knowledge of adult education principals and/or literacy experience (tutoring or teaching);
- Knowledge of community resources, including Aboriginal community resources;
- Ability to work as part of a team, set priorities and meet deadlines;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to design and execute presentations and workshops
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality according to agency policies;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); and
- Ability to pass an enhanced reliability screening with Manitoba Corrections.
