About the Position:

The West Central Women’s Resource Centre (WCWRC) provides services and programming to women and families in the West Central neighbourhood of Winnipeg. WCWRC is seeking a Child Care Assistant Mentor to help graduates of an Early Childhood Education course, taught at our centre, with job search skills in the Child Care field (at daycares or starting their own home daycare).

Contract: $1632 (about 48 hours)
Duration: Dec. 12, 2011 - Feb. 29, 2012 (hours to be determined)

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Design group workshops on topics of: job search in child care, resume writing, cover letters, interview skills and the government regulations regarding setting up a home daycare (10-15 hrs. in mid-Dec., 2011 and early Jan., 2012)
• Arrange individual time with each student for assistance with her job search (2-3 hrs./student)
• Arrange mentoring space at West Central Women’s Resource Centre
• Base mentoring on needs of students (mostly Newcomers)
• Pick out potential difficulties and plan activities to help students

Requirements:

• Accessible to and supportive of West Central community women
• EAL experience working with newcomer adults
• experience with job search assistance with Newcomers
• Open to different methods of teaching for different learning styles
• Early Childhood Education background or experience in job search education
• Experience providing counselling or peer support
• Excellent interpersonal communication and conflict management skills
• Strong skills in empathy, patience, empowerment and confidence-building
• Strong writing and computer skills;
• Independent with strong organizational skills
• Awareness and sensitivity to issues of marginalization (sexism, racism, classism)
