Food Secure Canada is a Canada-wide alliance of civil society organizations and individuals collaborating to advance dialogue and cooperation for policies and programs that improve food security in Canada and globally. Together we are creating the building blocks of a healthy, fair and ecological food system, grounded in strengthened democracy and community action. Food Secure Canada is the only diverse national food issues network in the country, with leaders from all regions and sectors.
The ideal candidate:
- Feels passionately about food issues in Canada and their connection to the environment, economy and health of Canadians. Has previous experience working within Canadian food movement networks and organizations, through program/project development, research and outreach.
- Has proven ability to build bridges, create partnerships, and achieve consensus among diverse groups, stakeholders and organizations. Food Secure Canada's Coordinator will be skillful and inclusive when reaching out to our wide array of members, cross-sectoral networks, and other stakeholders.
- Brings skills and experience developing multifaceted communications approaches to engage diverse sectors and link communities across the country. Food Secure Canada's Coordinator will work in collaboration with others across the country to develop new communications systems and materials, programs, coalitions and projects.
Desired qualifications:
- Commitment to social justice and experience with “on the ground” organizing, including participatory community development approaches.
- Experience working in the food movement and using a food systems approach.
- Ability to work productively with a diverse groups of stakeholders, support them to reach consensus and find common ground.
- Experience working collectively with a team (including identifying and supervising volunteers), as well as the ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to develop communications materials and systems, projects, coalitions, events and programs for social justice.
- Technical skills required to operate, manage and improve membership information systems, databases, websites, newsletters and other information and communications management systems and platforms
- Experience and interest in fundraising
- Strong attention to detail
- An educational background including the interrelationship between food, health, agriculture, equity, economy and sustainability.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills.
- Fluency in English and French (Food Secure Canada is a bilingual organization) would be an asset.
- Ability to work flexible and irregular hours and to travel several weeks a year.
Job description:
- Coordinate and facilitate networks, programs and projects in accordance with FSC workplan (eg. Rural, Remote or Northern Project, Provincial Networks Network , Children and Food, New Farmers Initiative, etc.
- Lead member relations /development
- Build membership and maintain contacts with member organizations and networks
- Administer membershipAdminister and develop all communication materials, including: list-serv, ebulletin, one time communications, etc
- Create and distribute regular communications with members (may include research or depend on research conducted by others)
- Communications:
- Administer website and all other administrative and communication systems
- Design materials for FSC, working with Communications Committee
- Respond to media requests and represent organization in the media and in public forums, when appropriate
- Work with ED in policy and program development and research
- Work with ED in developing organization’s strategic plan /annual workplan
- Work with ED in seeking funding and writing grant proposals
- Identify new and emerging opportunities for FSC and partners
- Coordinate and supervise volunteers
- If staff is not hired to organize the Assembly:
- Organize biennial Assembly
- Seek donors and partners for Assembly
- Support biennial electronic AGM
- Take minutes of Steering and Executive Committee meetings
- Participate in strategic planning processes for FSC
- Other tasks as required
This is a ten-month renewable position. Salary range is $50,000-$60,000 per year pro rated including benefits, based on experience. Please forward a cover letter and resume to COORD_hiring_committee@foodsecurecanada.org.
