About the Program
We have three full-time Farm Program Assistant positions available at FortWhyte Farms, dedicated to growing food, youth and community, starting early May until the end of August.
Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the FortWhyte Farms Program Assistants support the operations of the FortWhyte Farms Program, a program designed to grow youth, food and community. The program is geared to develop vocational and life skills in youth at-risk by engaging them in the sustainable production, harvest and marketing of natural agricultural products using FortWhyte’s diverse 640-acre land base for the multi-faceted operations.
Duties include:
- Assisting the Program Coordinator with the operations of beekeeping, vermi-composting and greenhouse systems on-site
- Helping with the maintenance and harvest of the 2 acre organic vegetable garden
- Engaging at-risk youth interns in the day-to-day operations including the production, harvesting and marketing of products from the sustainable agricultural projects by modeling what needs to be done
- Providing a strong work ethic role model for the youth interns
- Developing mentor-type relationships with the youth interns
- Providing transportation for the interns using Bison Run van as needed
- Other FortWhyte Farms duties as assigned
Basic Hiring Criteria include:
- Experience in working with children and youth, Aboriginal youth in particular (Child abuse registry check and criminal records check are required before position begins.)
- Related post-secondary education
- Related work experience
- Initiative and proven problem solving skills
- Effective communication skills
- Physically fit
- Landscaping or agricultural experience an asset
- Valid Driver’s License, access to private transportation and a willingness to obtain a Class 4 license
- Certification in First Aid and CPR an asset
- Knowledge of FWA site an asset
- First Nations or Métis background is a definite asset.
