POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the After School Program Coordinator, the Program Support Worker is a competent individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and mandate to empower newcomer families to integrate into the wider community through affordable transitional housing, programs, and services. The Program Support Worker is a vibrant, resourceful individual able to meet the challenges of working with a culturally diverse group of children and youth. He/she will work towards empowering program participants to take an active interest in healthy living through recreational, outreach and educational activities. The preferred candidate will uphold and exhibit the core values of respect, non- violence, equality, fairness, and team work.

Objective

The objective of this position is to promote healthy living and community building for newcomer children and youth living at IRCOM and in the community through active participation in year-round recreation and education programs. IRCOM programs seek to support participants in developing a sense of confidence and belonging that will ensure their successful transition to life in Canada.

Programming

  •   Assist the Program Coordinator in planning, designing and implementing activities geared to engage children and youth in recreation and educational programs.
  • Support the lead program staff member in designing, planning and implementing educational and recreational programs geared towards engaging parents and their children in the family program once a week.
  • Plan for and run the children’s variety night program ensuring a mix of different activities incorporating both literacy and recreational components.
  • Implement and enforce rules and behaviour expectations. Work through conflict situations calmly, with the goal of developing respect and mutual understanding.
  • Mediate between youth who are disagreeing & promote peaceful conflict resolution.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies to teach respect and develop non-violent behaviour.
  • Supervise unstructured play time, as well as sports and recreation activities.

Administration

  • With help from the Program Coordinator, acquaint yourself with the After School Program evaluation with a view to independently plan and implement evaluation activities and report to the funder.
  • Prepare a monthly calendar indicating the programming activities for the month.
  • Where necessary, assist the Program Coordinator in writing grant letters and reporting to funders.
  • Assist in applying for and renew gym permits and visit off-site facilities on a regular basis.
  • Assist with planning field trips and special events.
  • Keep accurate daily records of participants; assist in administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Represent the Program Coordinator and IRCOM in coalition meetings and other partnership meetings where necessary.
  • Work in collaboration with partner agencies through outreach activities and joint events. 

Support

  • Develop relationships with newcomer children and youth and their families and be a positive role model. 
  • Tailor additional supports for children and youth, in collaboration with their families and the Program Coordinator, when needed.     
  • Work in cooperation with other programs at IRCOM, including the Volunteer Program, Community Resource Program, Housing and the Newcomer Literacy Initiative.
  • Interpretation and / or translation if applicable / as needed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as international development, conflict resolution, social work, sports and recreation programming plus a minimum 2 years direct children and youth programming experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workWritten and oral English communication skills
  • Excellent cross-cultural and team work skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Must be open-minded, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to supporting and empowering the newcomer community through previous volunteering / community involvement 
  • International education/experience is recognized  
  • Newcomer experience is an asset
  • Knowledge of additional languages is an asset
  • First Aid, CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset
  • Class 5 Drivers License and access to a personal vehicle is an asset
  • Must undergo Criminal Record Check, as well as Child Abuse Registry Check

Hours of work

This is a part-time position for a maximum of 30 hours per week.  The Program Support Workers hours will be arranged in consultation with the Program Manager and scheduled around the needs of the program. Staff will work evenings and some weekends. Overtime work is compensated by time and a half off, and must be authorized by the Executive Director.
