The Youth Intern will facilitate the Homework Club Program at the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre by encouraging attendance, helping youth ages 6-18 complete their homework, organizing volunteers and providing training to youth on computer use. The Intern will also be responsible for maintaining and updating the computers on site and encouraging community computer access. 10 week contract with possible renewal (funding dependent)
The duties of the YI include:
- Ensure community computers are in working order
- Ensure community computers have appropriate anti-virus and filtering software
- Create a database of appropriate sites and games for kids and teens
- Assist in reviewing and updating our current internet usage policy
- Host training sessions to teach computer skills to youth
- Assist kids and teens in accessing educational internet sites
- Assist kids and teens with Homework and educational activities
- Resolve youth behaviour problems
- Assist in organizing and training Homework club volunteers
- Connect with Teachers to ensure homework club is meeting school standards
- Connect and support parents with the educational goals of their children
The successful candidate will:
- Demonstrate strong experience working with children and youth
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience of computer hardware and software
- Have good communication, teamwork and conflict resolution skills
- Have excellent organizational skills
Preference will be given to candidates that:
- Live in, or can demonstrate significant familiarity of Spence neighbourhood
- Have a depth of understanding of education issues in Winnipeg
Candidates can expect to undergo criminal record and child abuse registry checks.
*The results of criminal record checks may or may not affect the candidate’s success.
