CCEDNet featured in profile on Weston Wheels CCEDNet's work in supporting an innovative social enterprise in Etobicoke was recently featured in the National Post. The article profiles Weston Wheels, a social enterprise trains at-risk youth to perform basic bicycle repair, while also offering them employment and life skills training. CCEDNet supported the Learning Enrichment Foundation (which operates the social enterpise) during the start-up phase and helped facilitate a strategic planning session. Northern CED News Taking Action to Address Food Security Acting on a pledge made in The Makimaniq Plan: A Shared Approach to Poverty Reduction (November, 2011), government departments and Inuit organizations are collaborating under the banner of the Nunavut Food Security Coalition to identify strategies to improve access to nutritious foods in the communities. The coalition is organizing a symposium in January, 2013, to look at which programs, policies, and initiatives are most likely to impact on the food security of Nunavummiut. Nunavut Premier Signs Memorandum of Understand on Poverty Reduction A Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak and the President of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated Cathy Towntongie. The MOU recognizes the importance of the Nunavut Roundtable for Poverty Reduction to inter-organizational collaboration in the implementation of The Makimaniq Plan. At the signing, the Premier also reaffirmed the Government of Nunavut will continue to be a partner in the Nunavut Food Security Coalition, which is developing a Food Security Strategy for the territory. >> Read more
ACL’s Success Story Shared in New PublicationThe success of Arctic Co-operatives Ltd. (ACL) may be widely known in Northern Canada, but now the entire world can learn from its achievements. The ACL is featured as one of the co-op success stories in Building a Better World: 100 Stories of Co-operation, new publication by the International Co-operative Alliance. According to the Alliance, ACL demonstrates “the power of the co-operative business model to turn around threatened communities and local economies.” National CED NewsMcKinsey report finds strength in co-operative business model Co-operatives grow at an identical rate to companies, and those mutuals in the food and agricultural have surpassed their corporate counter-parts. This is the message from the Mckinsey on Co-operatives report unveiled at the International Summit of Cooperatives on October 9 in Quebec City. Unique Position to Focus on Co-ops in University Business Faculty The Province of Manitoba has committed funding to create a chair in co-operative enterprises for the development and delivery of a co-op business program at the University of Winnipeg. According to Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross, the program will “help raise awareness of the benefits of co-operatives to the general public and act as a resource for the business community.” This one-of-a-kind position will be responsible for developing the University’s faculty of business and economics’ concentration in co-operative management.
