DESCRIPTION:
The Aboriginal Business and Community Development Centre is a non-profit society, incorporated under the British Columbia Society Act on July 22, 1997.
We are a results oriented team of professionals, working together in unity to provide a full spectrum of culturally, client sensitive, business and economic development services to assist Aboriginal individuals, organizations and communities to achieve 'their' full potential. We are currently serving over 2,100 Aboriginal clients.
We are looking to hire a recent graduate to train in Business and Community Economic Development. This is a temporary (six month) work-experience position for recent undergrads. It is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to work on community economic development projects and with business development clients. The internship goes from April to September 30th, 2013. There is the potential to leverage the work experience into permanent full-time employment.
MAIN DUTIES:
Meet with clients, regarding business ideas and assist clients with the business proposal package. Provide business and financial counseling services to Aboriginal small business clients. Help with the preparation of business and marketing plans, assist with applications for funding and provide aftercare and mentoring. Performs duties that require confidentiality and tact. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary. The ability to network with community agencies and industry to promote the services of ABDC.
- Develop a business plan for a community organization
- Mentoring four business incubation clients. This includes hands-on, day-to-day support and coaching
- Development and delivery of workshops for our clients
- Business development duties
- Business plan development
- Assistance with market research
- Accessing capital
- Financial forecasting
- Develop monthly activity reports for CreateAction
SUPERVISION:
The youth receives general direction from the Executive Director
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
- Youth must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of intake/selection;
- a post-secondary institute, college, university or CEGEP graduate;
- out of school;
- a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee status has been conferred;
- legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations;
- not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits;
- can demonstrate a lack of labour market attachment to field of study (under-employed or unemployed)
- can demonstrate that working in the field of community economic development is a career goal; and
- has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience placement.
COMPENSATION:
$15.00/hour for 35 hours per week.
Normal hours of work will be 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.
