Local Investment Toward Employment (LITE) is a non-profit, fundraising organization that supports innovative, inner city initiatives that build capacity and provide jobs. We aim to support Community Economic Development (CED) and increase awareness of CED in Winnipeg. Our Social Purchasing Portal (SPP) project is a searchable online directory and network that connects local suppliers with purchasing partners who support CED and opportunities for local employment.
The intern will learn about and participate in fundraising and promoting CED, and through activities of the Social Purchasing Portal will have an opportunity to improve communication knowledge and skills while working with social enterprises, co-ops and socially minded Winnipeg Businesses.
About the Position:
- Responsibilities of the position will include:
- Support for communication related tasks for the Social Purchasing Portal and LITE by implementing social marketing strategies that will help raise awareness about CED and our organization
- Support with Social Media and Website updates for the Social Purchasing Portal.
- Assist with increasing public visibility of SPP business and social enterprise partners by writing profile stories and conducting interviews
- Support for planning learning events targeted to SPP supplier partners (social enterprises, co-ops, small businesses)
- Providing assistance with any event tasks as needed
- Research CED and Market trends to identify the impact of CED and Ethical Purchasing
- Assist with the recruitment of participants in LITE’s summer fundraising event, Run for Rights
- Assist with LITE’s fundraising activities
- Assist with the planning of LITE’s Annual General Meeting
- Provide assistance with some basic administrative tasks
- Deliver public presentations and info tables to promote CED and our projects
Qualifications
- Team player with positive attitude
- Good at taking direction but also able to take initiative when needed
- Excellent communications in writing, in person, and on the phone
- some experience editing documents
- Computer literate (competent with Microsoft Office programs)
- Effective using social media
- Knowledge of community economic development (CED)
- Experience with Winnipeg’s CED/non-profit organizations & projects is considered an asset
- Having a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is considered an asset
Applicants must meet the following requirements for this position:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at time of selection
- A post-secondary institute, college, university or CEGEP graduate
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee status has been conferred
- Legally entitled to work
- Not in receipt of EI benefits
- Unemployed or underemployed
- Can demonstrate that working in the field of Community Economic Development is a career goal
- Has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience placement
Terms & Conditions:
The Communications Intern will report to LITE’s Executive Director and LITE’s Social Purchasing Portal Coordinator.
Hours per week/Length of Contract: 35 hrs/week; Mid April – September 30th, 2013
Wage: $15/hr
