Paid Internship (35 hours/week) - Until September 30, 2013
DMSMCA is a non-profit community renewal organization. We work with residents and stakeholders towards the social, cultural, economic and environmentally sustainable renewal and revitalization of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews neighbourhoods. 
Our vision is to take a holistic community approach that encompasses environmental sustainability, social justice and community development towards the issues of neighbourhood wellbeing, greening and environment; providing tools and resources, organising and empowering residents and building stronger ties between people, connecting them with their community and the environment. 

Job Objectives:

In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Community Greening and Environment Coordinator Intern oversees the implementation of the DMSMCA Greening and Environment Program – goals, priorities and initiatives outlined under the DM/SM Neighbourhood 5 year plan and 5 Year Green Action Plan. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Continue the implementation of the 2010 - 2015 DM/SM Green Action Plan, including co-ordinating a small community consultation to update the Plan (in collaboration with the Executive Director).
  • Support the Community Gardens program (in collaboration with Summer Employees) – we have 4 community gardens throughout our neighbourhood. 
  • Co-ordinate the development of a sustainability plan (in collaboration with the Executive Director and a business plan consultant) for our Composting for Communities program (a small social enterprise - a neighbourhood composting program that picks-up compost from local restaurants and organisations by bicycle). 
  • Coordinate and support other local Greening and Environment activities, including: neighbourhood cycling/active transportation, Orioles Bike Cage, identifying the education and resources local residents and businesses require to make positive changes (e.g. environmental workshops, etc.).
  • Network and collaborate with local environmental and community partners, including residents, organisations, businesses and different levels of government. 
  • Develop and write funding proposals (in collaboration with the Executive Director) to support current and future greening and environment initiatives. 

Qualification and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts and/or Master of Urban Planning or Environmental Studies/ Urban Design and/or equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience conducting research and literature reviews.
  • Experience leading public consultations including focus groups.
  • Experience organising and facilitating committees, chairing meetings, taking minutes, etc. 
  • Knowledge and experience in Community Development and Community Economic Development.
  • Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Proven experience delivering results on time and on budget.

  • Understanding and appreciation of inner city communities;

  • Working with historically marginalized populations; and 
  • Computer capability; and 
  • Knowledge of the Daniel McIntyre St. Matthews Community (preference given to DM/SM residents).

Applications must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of intake/selection;
  • a post-secondary institute, college, university or CEGEP graduate;
  • out of school;
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee status has been conferred;
  • legally entitled to work in Canada 
  • not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits;
  • able to demonstrate a lack of labour market attachment to field of study (under-employed or unemployed);
  • able to demonstrate that working in the field of community economic development is a career goal; and
  • someone who has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience placement.

Submitting an Application:

Wage: $15/ hour 
Hours of Work: Up to 35 hours/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is a paid internship until  September 30, 2013 but the position has a very strong possibility of developing into full-time permanent position once internship is complete.
Start Date: Immediately
