Social Enterprise Toronto (SET) is a Toronto based network of social enterprises. Our mission is to grow non-profit social enterprise in the GTA. We are seeking applicants to conduct strategic research with our members and other GTA social enterprises.
The purpose of this research is to compile highly relevant, practical information that will be of use to those operating social enterprises as well as those in early design phase. This is your chance to be a part of a growing sector and to advance community learning and practice.

Prerequisites: To participate in Career Focus, applicants MUST be:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at time of selection
- A post-secondary institute, college, university or CEGEP graduate
- Out of school
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee status has been conferred
- Legally entitled to work
- Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.
- Unemployed or underemployed
- Has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience placement
Scope of Work:
The Community Based Researcher will collaborate to design and carry out research exclusively with food based social enterprises. Research will include a comprehensive review of key facets of food based social enterprises including business model, strengths, weakness, marketing practices, start ups, and potential for collaboration.
Research findings will be compiled in a final report and disseminated through Social Enterprise Toronto. The Community Based Researcher will help organize a Social Enterprise conference where they will present and discuss their findings.
Location:
This position will be hosted at The LOFT Youth Centre for Social Enterprise and Innovation, 850 Bloor St W, Toronto.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development, implementation and modification of tools and systems for data collection
- Conduct informational interviews with SET members
- Retrieve and compile database information for research projects
- Develop and distribute research reports in a variety of forms
- Assist in the development of a social enterprise conference
- Participate in promoting the Occupational Health & Safety Policy Statement including participation in health & safety education and training
- Work in compliance with health & safety policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Candidate will meet the following requirements:
- Meet all Career Focus Prerequisites as set out by Service Canada
- Research, surveying, analysis and database management skills
- Strong computer skills (MS Office & Social Networking Tools)
- Strong initiative and time management skills with proven ability to multi-task
- Able to work independently and as a member of a team
- Able to relate to different socio-economic and cultural groups
- Strong written communication skill
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Food service, culinary, and restaurant experience is highly desireable
- Experience with event planning and logistics an asset
- Strong interest in furthering social enterprise
- Can demonstrate that this position relates directly to career goals
Terms of Employment
- $15 per hour; 35 hours per week;
- Generally Monday to Friday, but will include evening and weekend work
