HIV/AIDS and Gender Program Officer

UGAMA is the Centre for Co-operative Services located in Gitarama, Rwanda. It is one of the key organizations undertaking co-operative development assistance in the Southern Province. UGAMA’s interventions focus on training (accounting, financial analysis), member participation, gender sensitization, as well as other capacity-building (management and marketing advice) activities with the aim of enabling members to promote the development of their own co-operatives. It also supports intra- and inter-cooperative exchanges, and provides a fund to help finance new and innovative business activity. UGAMA’s program participants are: small farmer co-operatives (24,000 members) and their secondary groups, credit and savings co-operatives (9,000 members) as well as three co-operatives involved in food processing.
The Project
CCA and UGAMA will work together building on the success of the previous project that engaged Rwandan agricultural co-operatives; this project will improve the agricultural production, productivity and marketing capacity of 15 co-operatives and their members in vulnerable, food-ensecure communities in two provinces (7 districts) of Rwanda.
Activities
The HIV/AIDS and Gender Program Officer will carry out the following activities and tasks:
1. Evaluate the impact of current project’s work on behaviour change in mitigating the impacts of HIV/AIDS.
a. Use Outcome Mapping to measure behaviour change outcomes of development projects.
b. Evaluation the impact of current Community Based Organizations and NGOs working indirectly with cooperatives.
2. Information Dissemination:
a. Build on the work of past interns for the HIV/AIDS and Gender work of the Centre de services aux coopératives.
b. Conduct follow-up research and information dissemination.
c. Develop further strategies for the dissemination of directories and analyses and have direct visits with the primary cooperatives.

d. Assess primary cooperatives ‘to-do’ list for HIV/AIDS and Gender interventions and create strategies for those that require more work.
Qualifications
The HIV/AIDS and Gender Program Officer must have the following qualifications:
1. Degree or equivalent experience in International Development and/or Social Science (focus on Gender, Youth, Community Outreach an asset).
2. Knowledge in community participation methodologies.
3. Experience facilitating group learning/training sessions or focus groups.
4. Formal computer skills (Microsoft Office).
5. Understanding of co-operatives or member-based business enterprises.
6. Demonstrated ability and interest in communicating and interacting effectively with people of a different culture.
7. Able to work in a team.
8. Can work in dynamic situations and is able to be flexible and adapt to change.
9. Takes initiative, set goals, and manage time independently, while seeking guidance and direction from your manager.
10. Bilingual French and English.
IYIP Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the international Youth Internship Program, an intern must:
1. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident legally entitled to work in Canada.
2. Be a post-secondary graduate.
3. Be out of school.
