Position details: Part-time (2 days/week) unionized position from September 2013 to September 2014. Possibility of contract extension and/or additional hours, fundraising permitting. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives operates as Secretariat for the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition and the position is coordinated through their BC office. 
 
Salary: Gross salary at 0.4-time for 12 months will be $18,214, plus pro-rated vacation time (with an increase in January and on the anniversary of the start date if the position continues beyond 12 months.)
 
The BC Poverty Reduction Coalition (BCPRC) aims to raise public awareness about poverty in BC and build support for a provincial poverty reduction plan from the government of British Columbia. We are seeking a Communications and Outreach Assistant to support the BCPRC’s ongoing communications and outreach efforts under the direction of the Community Organizer. It involves a mix of strategic communications, youth and community engagement, facilitation, creative services and administration.
 
Duties and responsibilities:
  •  Work closely with the Community Organizer to assist in the BCPRC’s online and offline community engagement and outreach;
  •  Assist with the development and implementation of the youth engagement strategy; provide mentorship to youth involved;
  •  Assist with the coordination and facilitation of events, meetings and workshops (includes public speaking); maintain long-term engagement of participants;
  •  Enhance and expand social media networks; 
  •  Maintain and update website content; layout e-newsletters;
  •  Layout and design (i.e.: posters, website and social media images, etc); 
  •  Undertake administrative tasks (spreadsheet updating, some photocopying, etc);
  •  Other duties as required by the Community Organizer.
 
The successful candidate will possess all or most of the following skills & qualifications:
  •  Ability to articulate and work with the ideas grounding the BCPRC; commitment to the BCPRC’s purpose and success;
  •  Knowledge and passion about social justice;
  •  Experience in community organizing and group facilitation, in particular, youth engagement;
  •  A relationship builder who can work with diverse participants, listen to the needs and perspectives of others, and strive for consensus when possible;
  •  Creativity and vision;
  •  Experience with social media platforms as organizational communications technologies; proficiency with social media management tools (e.g. HootSuite);
  •  Experience with layout and graphic design; proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite;
  •  A high degree of overall competence using computers, including: knowledge ofspreadsheets; experience working in the Mac OS; knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and standard internet and email applications;
  •  Knowledge of internet technologies, including website content management systems (e.g. WordPress) and web-based email newsletter systems (e.g. MailChimp) – as user, not as programmer or website designer;
  •  Knowledge of the political context in BC, primarily at the provincial level but with some understanding of the municipal and federal level;
  •  Willingness to take on administrative duties;
  •  Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage projects effectively;
  •  Excellent interpersonal skills.
 
Contract details
This is a part-time (2 days/week) unionized 12-month contract beginning as soon as possible in September.
