The Manitoba Urban Inuit Association is looking for a part-time Consultant (18.75 hrs. p/ wk) to lead an education and economic support initiative together with post-secondary institutions and the Inuit community.
MUIA is looking for a part-time Consultant (18.75 hrs. p/ wk) to lead an education and economic support initiative together with post-secondary institutions and the Inuit community.
The successful candidate has demonstrated the following:
Education and Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working within the non-profit sector or economic development
- Degree or Diploma from a College or University in Business Administration, Community Development, Aboriginal Studies or related fields. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
Demonstrated success in:
- Proposal development;
- Program management;
- Government and funder relations;
- Community development, including researching and conducting needs assessments;
- Inuit cultural experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Experienced planning and implementing business meetings with senior stakeholders of the Aboriginal community in Winnipeg;
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of audiences;
- Knowledge of post-secondary institutions and educational programs is desired;
- Ability to work with youth;
- Highly motivated, self-directed, and able to efficiently plan and execute multiple projects;
- Experience with economic development projects and/or business development;
- Knowledge of the resources available in the community for Inuit experiencing poverty, housing shortages, challenges in post-secondary education;
- Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office (word, excel, PowerPoint);
- Ability to work in a cross cultural environment; and,
- Ability to speak Inuktitut or Inuinaqtun is an asset
Duties and Responsibilities
·Research and understand needs of Inuit students from MB and Nunavut
·Develop strategies to build relationships between NU and MB for both educational and economic development, and to work directly with students from NU and MB who require support.
·Determine and develop appropriate partnerships to support Inuit students who come to the South for school in and for permanent Inuit residents of MB.
·Develop a plan for needs assessment and for individual transitional support..
·Contact post- secondary institutions, skills training providers and funding agencies to identify the number of Inuit students and graduation/completion data. Maintain a database in Excel of student information.
·Contact centres in other jurisdictions (e.g. Nunavut Sivuniksavut in Ottawa) and in MB jurisdictions to discover strategies and programs that have proven to be successful in providing support.
·Develop plans to outline next steps and program developments.
- Initiate and conduct original research with Inuit in Winnipeg to identify demographics and program needs within the urban Inuit population.
- Work with the MUIA Executive Director to build relationships with post-secondary institutions and training institutions in Manitoba.
- Provide outreach and counselling to Inuit youth interested in pursuing post-secondary education.
