Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization which was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of community-based organizations and other partners to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Many of our programs are delivered through a national network of community and university based initiatives.
Programming in the Province:
We partner with schools, community centres, and libraries to reach children, youth, and adults through homework clubs, one-to-one and small group tutoring. In the summer we offer an extensive Reading Tent program and work with rural and remote communities to offer our summer literacy camps. We continue to grow our work in Manitoba and are working to expand our menu of services throughout the province.
We are seeking a full-time Community Coordinator who will work with partners, volunteers, interns and summer staff to manage existing programs and implement new programming in the province. Travel is required.
Overall Accountability
Representing Frontier College in the community, the Community Coordinator is a member of the Prairie Regional program staff team; working both independently and collaboratively to carry out and promote the work of Frontier College. This position reports to the Prairie Regional Program Manager.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Mobilize, train, supervise, support, and manage volunteers to work in the community and other rural settings.
- Recruit, screen, train, support and manage staff: interns, camp counselors and summer students
- Conduct promotion, outreach and logistics to support local activities.
- Develop and support community partnerships, relationships and model programs.
- Coordinate community-based conferences and special events.
- Design, deliver and evaluate community networking activities, workshops and presentations.
- Plan, manage, implement and evaluate pilot projects, tutoring programs, Reading Tents & summer camps.
- Complete and write reports and manage an annual program budget.
- Administrative tasks including, but not limited to, monthly expenses, timesheets, database entry
- Other duties as assigned

- Knowledge of literacy, community development and social issues.
- Knowledge and experience working in community settings, with volunteers.
- Energetic, resourceful, tolerant of ambiguity.
- Able to think critically, solve problems and manage details.
- Work well independently and as part of a team.
- Skills in volunteer management, partnering, outreach, networking, workshop planning and facilitation.
- Excellent spoken and written communication.
- Computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, Excel and Internet).
- Organized, able to manage multiple tasks and deal with stress.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
