Position Summary

The Team Lead of Community Development supports ethno-cultural communities using the Community Development approach of self-reliance, empowerment and organizational capacity building.

The Team Lead of Community Development engages communities from a set of values promoting collective working, learning and reflecting, participation, political awareness and sustainable change. Community Development involves working primarily with local immigrant communities and community leaders to help them understand and engage with the communities that they serve.

The Community Development Team Lead is responsible for overseeing, development and implementation of EMCN’s community development strategies. The Community Development Team Lead engages with community partners to build capacity within the immigrant and refugee communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership training and recruiting of community practitioners to network with existing immigrant/refugee community based organizations, and support them to enhance their skills and services.
  • Facilitate focus group processes related to community development as well as community initiative and workshops.
  • Provide immigrant and refugee communities with information regarding grants, program support and implementation.
  • Assist immigrant communities in program design, delivery and evaluation.
  • Assist immigrant and refugee communities through training and workshops in board development, volunteer recruitment, strategic planning and community engagement.
  • Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN and immigrant/refugee communities.
  • Assist immigrant and refugee communities with identifying community needs through community needs assessment.
  • Act as a liaison between immigrant and refugee communities and mainstream organizations in order to improve awareness and understanding of the challenges facing immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Participate in community initiatives and empower women/youth groups to build strong inter-community dialogue and leadership.
  • Advise on Community Economic Development; by providing support, information and referral for small business clients and social enterprise and financial literacy opportunities to interested parties.
  • Provide supervision and support to both full-time, part-time and contract staff members.
  • Writing funding proposals and submitting reports/evaluations.
  • Experience in holistic case management and program delivery including arranging program logistics, engaging presenters and working with partner agencies.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment and 5 years program coordination experience in the non profit sector
  • Ability to perform a variety of diverse tasks with minimal supervision

Qualifications

  • University degree or diploma in a related field such as Community Development, Economic Development, Human Ecology, Volunteer Management or related.
  • Detailed knowledge of Edmonton’s diverse communities.
  • Five plus years of Community Development experience, with demonstrated experience building relationships with community partners and external stakeholders, including funders.
  • Self-motivated, strategic thinker, strong attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects at one time, while meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing leadership programs.
  • The ability to facilitate, lead and motivate project teams to the complete the assigned project.
  • Competency in report and proposal writing.
  • A clean driving abstract and car is needed for this position

Commensurate with experience and qualifications (37.5hrs/wk, 3 month probationary period))
