Food Matters Manitoba is creating an applicant pool for a project coordinator for a Local Sustainable Procurement project that will recruit pilot purchasers, connect pilot purchasers to local, sustainable food sources, and develop and implement tracking mechanisms for local, sustainable food purchases.

The Local Sustainable Procurement Program will enlist the voluntary participation of iinstitutional food purchasers to track local sustainable food purchases. Food item characteristics will be measured in the pilot phase to identify what is currently local sustainable and what opportunities exist for non-qualifying items to be replaced by local sustainable products. The coordinator will also connect food purchasers with sources of local sustainable products.

The position is 35 hours per week, $17-19 per hour based in Winnipeg with some travel to rural Manitoba.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Recruit and train voluntary purchaser participants
  • Educate initial purchasers regarding ongoing data collection tool
  • Ongoing data capture and analysis
  • Gather and analyze benchmark data
  • Liaise with LFP consultants to develop and implement tracking processes
  • Liaise with steering committee
  • Develop resources to connect institutional purchasers and local and/or sustainable products
  • Conduct outreach to farms to recruit and educate farms about certification, arrange certification for producers with third party

Experience and Qualifications:

  • An understanding of government and/or institutional food procurement
  • Knowledge of conventional and alternative food marketing and distribution systems
  • Knowledge of and experience with database development and management
  • A strong commitment to growing local and sustainable food systems
  • Must be creative thinker, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent
  • Highly organized with proven attention to detail
  • Able to exercise independent judgment but work well as part of a team
  • Able to multitask effectively and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Strong English written and oral communication skills
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
  • Valid drivers’ licence and access to a vehicle
