Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Director of Programming, the Childcare Coordinator is a competent individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and mandate to empower newcomer families to integrate into the wider community through affordable transitional housing, programs, and services. This staff is a detail oriented, efficient and resourceful individual with strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills, able to meet the challenges of working with a culturally diverse group of community members. The ideal candidate will be able to multi-task in a fast paced environment prioritizing tasks and executing them to a high degree of accuracy. The Childcare Coordinator will exhibit and uphold core values of respect, non-violence, equality, and team work.
Objective
The objective of the Childcare Coordinator position is to ensure the provision of quality care for newcomer children whose parents are participants in IRCOM programs such as the Newcomer Literacy Initiative (EAL classes) and the Community Resource Program’s workshops. The Childcare Coordinator is responsible for the planning, administration and implementation of an age appropriate childcare program in accordance with the Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) regulations for children aged 3 months – 5 years in off-site and on-site, non-licensed settings. The IRCOM Childcare Program will strive to provide safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate care for our newcomer children.
Childcare Program Administration
- Enhance and develop IRCOM’s Childcare Program so that it meets all CNC requirements
- Communicate closely with CMAS (the oversight body for CNC) to ensure that CNC guidelines are being met and all monitoring and evaluation processes are in place
- With support from senior management, develop a policy and procedures manual for the Childcare Program
- Develop, coordinate, and monitor the effectiveness of the IRCOM Childcare Program’s administrative procedures
- Ensure accurate child and program records are being kept for all childcare sites, including records such as child’s attendance, registration data, permission slips, etc.
- Plan, manage, and monitoring the IRCOM Childcare Program budget and expenses
- Ensure the Childcare Program is compliant with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and CNC security requirements
- Distribute, collect, approve and manage all ECE and Childcare Assistant time sheets
- Develop and maintain childcare staff schedules
- Act as an internal staff liaison to facilitate communication between the Childcare Program staff and other IRCOM staff
- Organize regular Childcare Program meetings, as well as participate in other IRCOM program meetings to help coordinate their childcare needs
- Attend IRCOM staff meetings, CMAS/CNC trainings and other organizational trainings as needed
- Purchase program supplies where required
- Other duties as assigned
Childcare Program Coordination
- Develop a multicultural and age-appropriate program for children of parents attending IRCOM programs
- Develop monthly activity plans for each site, including full activity descriptions, snack plans and designated roles and responsibilities for Childcare Program staff in accordance with CNC requirements
- Provide support and supervision to childcare staff and volunteers
- Undergo / conduct an annual performance appraisal for each childcare staff member
- Using CMAS tools, develop and deliver ongoing training for childcare staff members and volunteers
Childcare Programming
- Supervise and ensure the physical and emotional safety of children attending IRCOM’s Childcare Program
- Welcome and interact with newcomer children and their parents
- Engage children in activities that support a child-centred approach and that meet the individual developmental needs of the children
- Guide and assist children in the development of healthy eating, dressing and toilet habits
- Assess the skills, abilities, interests and needs of children
- Discuss children’s progress or concerns with parents and other staff members
- Set up and take down equipment and other items used in the program
- Inspect childcare space/facilities for safety issues and seek corrective action according to procedures
- Work with team members to create a positive environment
- Regular lifting and participating in physical activities
Qualifications
- Early Childhood Education Level II Diploma or in the process of training with completion expected before March 31, 2014 is required
- A minimum of 12 months experience in a supervisory role is required
- Valid First Aid Certificate – Level B CPR
- Valid Criminal Record Check, and clear Child Abuse Registry Check
- Positive attitude and friendly manner
- Strong planning, organizational, leadership and communication skills
- Direct experience creating and maintaining accurate and detail orientated records
- Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of immigrant families
- Strength, stamina and ability to work with active, young children
- Demonstrated strong ability to work as a member of a small team
- Must be open-minded, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent
- Demonstrated strong commitment to supporting the newcomer community through previous volunteering / community involvement is an asset
- Knowledge of a language other than English an asset
- Newcomer experience is an asset
- International education/experience is valued
Hours of work
This is a full-time position for a maximum of 37.5 hours per week. This is a term position until March 31st renewal of funding. The Childcare Coordinator’s hours will take place during IRCOM business hours between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday; however some evenings and weekends may be required as per the needs of IRCOM programs.
