The Labour Education Centre is seeking a motivated and experienced community activist to manage an exciting new project, the Toronto Community Benefits Network, to bring a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) to the building of Toronto’s Light Rail Transit lines. A CBA will ensure that the diversity of workers on the lines reflect the diversity of the residents of Toronto. For more details, see http://www.communitybenefits.ca

Education / Experience Required

• Post Secondary qualification and/or 5 years relevant experience in project management, community development, stakeholder relations, economic research or related fields.

Skills Required

  1. Knowledge of workforce development with an equity perspective.
  2. Proven experience working with diverse communities.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of government structure and ability to liaise with, elected officials, civil servants, community and labour leaders.
  4. Experience related to project development, implementation, fulfillment duties related to community outreach and civic engagement with local residents as well as government and industry stakeholders.
  5. Demonstrated project management experience.
  6. Demonstrated organizing experience.
  7. Strong interpersonal skills, positive, and professional attitude.
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills, team player, organized, innovative, self-motivated, proactive, attention to detail.
  9. Second language an asset

Duties & Responsibilities

Program Development

  1. Manage day-to-day programming of project team and tasks.
  2. Liaise with, engage and organize community groups and residents.
  3. Strengthen collaborations with and between the network’s membership.
  4. Work to ensure equitable outcomes for the various groups.
  5. Supervise a small team of part-time community organizers
  6. Flag upcoming issues/concerns/opportunities related to the successful attainment of a CBA
  7. Create a knowledge mobilization strategy to advance common awareness of CBA.
  8. Development and coordination of activities related to identifying and appropriately. recommend key activities and research recommendations noted or anticipated that may address economic challenges for historically disadvantage Torontonians.
  9. Prepare material and make preparations for formal and informal presentations on CBA.
  10. Other duties as required.

Partnership Development

  1. Identify and pursue new partnerships with not-for-profits groups industries, networks,  community-based organizations and labour to expand reach and support for a CBA and increase overall societal engagement.
  2. Identification and development of new relationships and growth opportunities for the CBA.

Terms of Employment

  1. The position is  full time and is accountable to the Project Lead/Relationship Director of the Toronto Community Benefits Network.
  2. This is a bargaining unit position of the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union(COPE) Local 343.
  3. The full-time salary is $64,560.57 (annual) plus benefits and vacation.
  4. The position is March 1 until Dec 31 2014, with the possibility of extension.
