Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. “Those Who Lead” is a dynamic and innovative Aboriginal led social development organization that provides a range of innovative and culturally based opportunities to Winnipeg’s diverse Aboriginal community.
Ka Ni Kanichihk’s Kistesimaw Mentor will provide support to children under the age of 12 (and their families) that are in conflict with the law. The mentor will provide positive alternatives to children and families through advocacy support; cultural based activities; school based support and activities; accessing appropriate community resources; free recreational activities from the City of Winnipeg and ongoing support to child and family as needed. This “wrap around” service delivery approach will be specifically tailored to meet the individual needs and self directed interest/goals of each participant.
Ka Ni Kanichihk is seeking a mature and independent individual with demonstrated skills and experience in providing positive and consistent guidance, advocacy and coaching supports to youth.
Qualifications:
- A university degree, or relevant post secondary education and three years of experience working in the Aboriginal community or a combination of education and experience.
- The candidate must possess the following skills; a strong understanding of child development processes; working with high risk populations; strong understanding of child protection and justice issues; and physically able to engage in a variety of activities with children.
- The candidate will also have experience with the following: knowledge of community resources; knowledge, identification and assessment of risk factors; advocacy experience; counselling support and knowledge of traditional healing practices.
- Must be able to identify and assess child & family risk factors and provide appropriate support and referrals to services to minimize risk factors.
- Coordinate and facilitate support services, accompanies child/family.
- Perform all administrative duties as necessary to the operations of the program.
- The candidate must demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and oral, strong interpersonal and organization skills and demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
- Strong organizational skills, computer proficiency, excellent communication, both written and oral, and professional work behaviors. Provides written evaluation for files, documents and reports incidents, and maintains accurate attendance records and mentoring activities.
- Must be respectful, sensitive, and responsive to gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status and sexual orientation as demonstrated in ability to communicate and interact with other staff and youth.
- Must be able to exemplify the qualities of honesty, integrity, fairness, empathy, patience and trustworthiness when dealing with youth.
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and to establish working relationships as a means of achieving goals and affecting change.
- Ability to be flexible and to work within a team environment.
- Ability to build strong, positive and effective relationships with youth and collaterals.
- Ability to work independently and under stress
- Access to a vehicle for transportation during working hours is essential.
