Position Type: Contract, 11 weeks, April 7th, 2014, until June 20th, 2014, inclusive
Salary: 15 hours per week at $19.00 per hour, flat rate.
The John Howard Society of Manitoba (JHSM) works with men who are 18 and over and are or have been involved in the criminal justice system. We offer a variety of programs, free of charge and judgment, with the goal of addressing the causes and consequences of crime. We also advocate for a more just, humane, and effective justice system based on the values of restorative justice. Our literacy program aims to assist adult learners in the Remand Centre with developing the literacy and numeracy skills they need to succeed at work, school, parenting, and community participation.
Our program is run through a peer tutoring model; we train incarcerated men with higher literacy skills to work with their lower literacy peers, with the goal of creating a culture of mutual assistance and love for learning in the Remand Centre. We have developed a 12-hour training course and a tutors' manual to equip potential peer tutors with the skills, knowledge, and resources to assist their friends successfully. We have run three sessions of this course so far in the pilot year of this program, and are looking for a skilled facilitator to deliver the fourth and final one.

will also provide on-going to one-to-one instruction to and resources for peer tutors and their students as needed throughout the week, on a flexible schedule.
Organizational relationship:
The Peer Tutor Program Facilitator (PTPF) reports directly to the Institutional Literacy Program Coordinator (ILPC). Supervision Exercised: In co-operation with the ILPC, the PTPF will assist both volunteer community tutors and peer tutors and their learners.

Principle Responsibilities:
- Facilitate a 10-session peer tutor training group course, as prescribed by existing curriculum.
- Provide one-to-one instruction for both peer tutors and their students as necessary.
- Gather appropriate literacy materials and resources for learners and peer tutors in order to support their learning.
Specific Accountabilities/Deliverables: The position requires that the incumbent have skills and abilities in interpersonal communication, leadership and supervisory skills, conflict resolution, and program facilitation. The incumbent must possess a high degree of self-motivation and be self-directing.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Education, Certificate in Adult Education, or equivalent professional degree or;a comparable combination of education, training and work force experience.
Experience:
- Experience working in the field of literacy program delivery.
- Experience working with criminalized people is an asset.
- Experience in class facilitation.
- Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of adult education principles and literacy experience (tutoring or teaching).
- Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to pass an enhanced reliability screening with Manitoba Corrections.
- Controls on freedom to act and problem-solving: Matters regarding overall agency policy, funding issues, staffing issues, and labour relations are referred to the Acting Executive Director.
