Synopsis: 

The Associate Director of Social Enterprise works with the MCC Manitoba (MCCM) Thrift Shop network, Sam’s Place Café/Bookstore, project development and other growing areas of social enterprise in Manitoba. S/he will take the lead on relationships with MCCM Thrift Shops, and other activities that combine both income generation and community development program goals. This position is accountable to the MCCM Executive Director and is part of the MCCM management team.

Qualifications: 

  • Understanding of and passion for MCC and its work
  • Entrepreneurial with a strong business development acumen and commercial/retail experience
  • Passionate about social entrepreneurship and committed to social justice
  • Creative and flexible; able to work in “grey” area between the private sector and non-profit community development
  • Able to empathize and collaborate with stakeholders from all sectors and backgrounds
  • Able to coach, inspire, and lead a team and a network of independent enterprises
  • Relevant post-secondary education such as Business Administration or Non-Profit Management
  • At least three years of relevant experience in a key leadership and development role
  • Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy, practice and promotion of "reduce, reuse, recycle" required
  • Team leadership and management skills, including initiative, team player, prioritization and planning
  • Ability to work in a non-hierarchal, collaborative, team environment alongside grassroots organizations
  • Business plan development, marketing, merchandising and strategic planning experience
  • Experience with volunteer Boards and Committees
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people within and outside the of the Manitoba Mennonite constituency; appreciative of volunteers
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills required including public speaking and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated problem/ conflict solving skills
  • Volunteer Management experience; Volunteer Management certificate an asset
  • Flexible work style; available for frequent weekend and evening work
  • Availability for regular provincial travel
  • Valid Manitoba Driver’s license
  • Access to personal car for work purposes
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of retail/business operating systems support

Duties: 

Resource and Direct all MCCM Thrift shops and Sam’s Place Café/Bookstore (80%)

  • Monitor and support Sam’s Place operations to ensure achievement of retail operations outcomes
  • Collaborate with Program Director in overall achievement of Sam’s Place social enterprise outcomes
  • Ensure current Memorandums of Understanding are signed and adhered to with all Thrift Shop Boards
  • Ensure Thrift Shop Boards appropriately supervise (hiring, Records of Agreement, direction, support, evaluation, terminations, etc.) their thrift shop paid staff
  • Set and manage annual budgets for thrift shop contributions to MCCM best practice benchmarks
  • Work alongside Boards to set and implement annual and long-range plans for thrift shops in Manitoba
  • Assist shops in developing business plans, marketing plans, capital improvement plans and staffing plans
  • Provide board training and development opportunities to thrift shop boards
  • Plan and implement quarterly managers' meetings, and bi-annual board member meetings including biblically-based reflections on MCC's mission and values
  • Provide resources for shops as appropriate, such as merchandising, product safety, marketing, volunteer management, pricing and trends, group purchasing, shared service agreements, etc.
  • Provide support in troubleshooting shop issues
  • Work with interested groups to open new shops and identify additional opportunities
  • Ensure that shops reflect MCC's Christian worldview and MCC's mission and values, in agreements, in visible materials in the shops, and in practice by staff and volunteers
  • Visit all MCCM Thrift Shops at least twice per year; assess for quality control and adherence with MCC standards
  • Provide resources, including guest speakers, for Thrift Shop Annual General Meetings, and volunteer appreciation events as needed
  • Plan and facilitate Learning Tour and Work and Learn Tour opportunities for Thrift Shop Board Members, Staff and volunteers
  • Participate in the MCC Thrift Shop Network

Project Development & Growing areas of Social Enterprise (20%)

  • Support MCCM’s Affordable Housing initiative on proposal development and project management
  • Develop new projects that fit within a social enterprise model in consultation with the Executive Director
  • Liaise with community based organizations exploring the possibility of partnerships for new ventures
  • Provide business development assistance to current MCCM programs that connect with principles of social enterprise
  • Collaborate with MCCM department directors and program coordinators to develop new social enterprise initiatives
  • Seek knowledge and research related to field of social enterprise
General
  • Participate as a member of the management team including monthly Team Director’s Council meetings
  • Prepare regular monitoring reports (financial, operations, etc) on social enterprise operations and assigned projects
  • Prepare project proposals and business plans for MCCM and resource key partners in development of others
  • Speak on behalf of MCC at volunteer dinners, churches or community functions, from a biblical basis, connecting MCC's mission, values and programs with the work done in individual shops
  • Monitor budget and expenses and participate in financial planning
  • Ensure that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example
  • Attend and be actively involved in a local congregation
  • Model non-violent peacemaking in the workplace and community through respectful interactions and work relationships
  • Field phone calls and provide information to walk-in constituents
  • Other duties as required

Location Description: 

Winnipeg is a city of approximately 650,000 located on the Red River, 108 kms north of the US border. Being near the centre of Canada, it is a major transportation centre. The city's population is fairly diverse, representing people from many different cultures. Most of the people are English speaking with French, Filipino and Chinese being other predominant languages. There are about 65,000 First Nations people living in Winnipeg.
There are almost 50 Mennonite churches in Winnipeg, which is home to about 30,000 Mennonites. Winnipeg has two large public liberal arts universities and a Mennonite university (Canadian Mennonite University). There are also two Mennonite private high schools.
Winnipeg temperatures can range from 40°C (104°F) in summer to -45°C (-49°F) in winter, with average summer temperatures around 25.4°C (77.7°F) and average winter temperatures around -12.9°C (8.8°F).

Challenges: 

  • Pilot the development of a new leadership position within the organization.
  • Develop strategic plans, goals, and resources, within an aggressive sales growth environment, for the MCCM thrift shop network.
  • Achieve a “dotted line” relationship with Thrift Shop Managers and Board Chairpersons thereby ensuring a close positive and collaborative working relationship with respect to hiring and evaluation of Managers and business development.
  • Personal resilience and stress management in a highly collaborative and complex structure that respects autonomy of independent enterprises while providing strong, strategic leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with other MCCM management members to ensure relevant programs are achieving both social enterprise and program goals.
  • Develop and initiate new social enterprise projects for MCCM.
