The Western Canada Green Economy Commercialization Initiative is a relatively new initiative to improve efforts already undertaken by many provincial and national organizations, municipalities, postsecondary institutions and the green industry throughout Western Canada, to strengthen the development of a green economy in Canada.

The goal of this work is to ensure economic, environmental and social sustainability of rural municipalities in Western Canada by implementing green technology that will ensure that Canada take its rightful place as a world leader in the development of the new “Green Economy”.

Director’s role

The Director of Municipal Relations will support the Green Economy Project Director through research, crafting of written materials, manage external relationships as well as logistical and administrative duties. The Director of Municipal Relations must also demonstrate the ability to develop reasonable understanding of new matters in a short period of time.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and grow strong relationships with key decision makers and influencers in and outside of different levels of government;
  • Identify and manage critical municipal and regulatory issues;
  • Monitor and conduct research on relevant public policy and political issues as well as on key decision makers and influencers;
  • Work closely with various parts of the organisation to identify and manage municipal-related issues and strategic priorities;
  • Draft and coordinate the approval of correspondence, presentations and formal policy submissions to elected and non-elected officials;
  • Organize, implement and evaluate highly complex and detailed special assignments;

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a related field such as corporate Government Relations, municipal government, journalism, communications, public relations, etc.
  • Thorough understanding of municipal government and Canada's political system(s), including the legislative, executive and judicial branches;
  • Experience presenting complex issues and opportunities to high-level officials and third party partners;
  • Ability to adapt and excel in a fast-paced, high-performing work environment;
  • Excellent writing, public speaking and analytical skills as well as strong inter-personal, organizational and time-management skills;
  • Past involvement in political or community events and organizations;
  • A university degree in history, political science, or journalism will be viewed positively;
  • Must be fully fluent (written and spoken) in both official languages;
  • Understanding of the Green Economy sector will be considered an asset;
  • Able to travel 2 to 4 months out of the year.
