LOYOLA CAMPUS Project Coordinator / General Manager

Project Coordinator needed to oversee the launching of a new solidarity cooperative café at Concordia University's LOYOLA campus in NDG; this role will transition into the permanent position of General Manager .

NDG Project Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Oversees the set-up process of a solidarity cooperative café, including the obtaining of all necessary legal documents, licensing, and certifications
  • In conjunction with the cooperative’s Board of Directors, oversees human resources including recruitment, hiring, training, providing feedback performance, and ongoing development
  • Oversees logistical set-up, including equipment purchasing, on-going construction processes, and infrastructure development
  • Collaborates in the finalization of a temporary menu (for year 1) constituted mostly of catered items obtained from local providers
  • Solidifies the café’s supply chain, adds to current list of suppliers, purchases and tracks inventory
  • Facilitates information flow and research for a market analysis and feasibility study conducted by CDEC's consultants
  • Facilitates communications between Hive project promoters, consultants, CDEC agents, and other funding bodies

NDG General Manager Responsibilities

  • Attends the cooperative’s Board meetings when necessary
  • Leads the day-to-day operations through hands-on personal involvement
  • Collaborates to develop and implement an operational plan appropriate to the cooperative, its user members, and its worker-members
  • Provides input and implements strategies to effectively manage productivity, labour, food and beverage costing and pricing, food quality, food safety, restaurant safety standards and guidelines, and sustainable waste reduction and management
  • Ensures staff and volunteers maintain the premises (kitchen, dining area, and bathroom) clean and inspection-ready
  • Assists in designing a new menu to see the café transition from a simple, mostly catered/pre-prepared menu toward a more complex and innovative menu of items prepared on-site
  • Prepares and updates schedules
  • Manages a team with a diversity of skills and talents and functions as a team leader
  • Shares expertise, mentors others, and fosters a climate of experiential learning, growth and improvement, as well as ongoing personal and collective development
  • Continues their own education/training as required to develop and acquire new skills in leadership, hospitality, and food issues
  • Implements promotional initiatives and fundraising strategies
  • Engages in community awareness initiatives and outreach as required; encourages and promotes community involvement; interacts with cooperative members to regularly assess and evaluate the degree of community satisfaction; recommends and implements new initiatives to keep up with demand and market changes; investigates and resolves any possible food quality or service complaints
  • Regularly communicates with the Board of Directors and helps implement the cooperative’s mandates
  • Upholds and promotes the social, environmental, and economic sustainability of the café as outlined in the cooperative’s constitution
  • Celebrates each of the cooperative’s milestones, while challenging everyone to continue their betterment

Qualifications

  • A love of food, a passion for food sovereignty, and a firm belief in the importance of sustainability
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • 2 years of related experience in restaurant or café management
  • Degree or diploma in Food and Beverage/Hospitality Management recommended (not required)
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, as well as safe food handling and compliance
  • Familiarity with the cooperative business model
  • Ability to function in a non-hierarchical environment
  • Ability to balance effective leadership skills with power-sharing abilities in a communal decision-making cooperative structure
  • Ability to inspire worker motivation, commitment, and effectiveness with progressive workplace practices that foster teamwork, open communication, respect, equality, safety, and helpfulness
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize workload, and multitasking
  • Financial competence including a clear understanding of margins and pricing, ability to read financial statements, knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, productivity analysis, and inventory management/controls techniques
  • Ethical conduct and responsibility – Sets a positive example and fulfills responsibilities with the highest integrity, ethics, and professionalism
  • Technologically proficient in basic computer skills

Salary: 35hrs/week @ 16$/hr
Timeline: July to December 2014. Contract renewal in January 2015
