12:00pm to 1:30pm

In this webinar, author and U.C. Berkeley professor of public policy Stephen Raphael will share relevant highlights from his book The New Scarlet Letter?: Negotiating the U.S. Labor Market with a Criminal Record. Key topics will include what is known about impact of criminal records and incarceration on people’s employment prospects, including employers’ perceptions of former inmates, and about the effectiveness of programs to help connect these job-seekers with employment. Professor Raphael will also share observations about the implications of increasing levels of incarceration and background checks on the U.S. labor market, including disparities in employment by race and ethnicity, and policy recommendations to improve employment prospects for formerly incarcerated people and those with criminal records.
