We are seeking a Neighborhood Immigrant Settlement Worker, (NISW) to work out of the Tuxedo Family Resource Centre, (1 - 225 Doncaster Street). This one year term position will commence in April, 2015 and extend until April, 2016. The NISW will provide settlement assistance to newcomer families living in the Tuxedo/River Heights/Fort Rouge areas of the city, assisting them to integrate into their community and life in Canada.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide outreach and engagement of newcomer families within the catchment area
- Conduct comprehensive needs assessments of newcomer families
- Provide resource information, advocacy and referral to community programs and services
- Promote awareness of newcomer issues within the broader community.
- Organize and facilitate events and programs in response to identified community needs, (English Conversation Circles, Parenting Workshops, Health and Wellness, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- University degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 2 years related post degree experience
- Well developed interpersonal communication & problem solving skills
- Understanding of the settlement process and issues related to the immigrant/refugee experience
- Ability to engage families of diverse backgrounds and provide emotional support
- Knowledge of child development, family dynamics and community resources
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, including collaboration with collaterals
- Ability to work flexible hours; occasional evening work required
- Ability to keep accurate records and write reports
- Successful completion of Child Abuse & Criminal Records Checks
- Valid driver’s license & car an asset
SALARY: As per union contract
