The Experiential Learning Coordinator is a new position within the University. The successful candidate will play a central role in growing and strengthening the University's experiential learning efforts. Duties and Responsibilities are seen below:

Responsibilities:

  • Through ongoing communication with key stakeholders, identify institutional barriers and enablers to experiential learning at The University of Winnipeg and recommend solutions to the Experiential Learning Network
  • Research best practices in community engagement, experiential education, program assessment/Evaluation, and risk management
  • Apply to foundations, government programs, and engage with potential private donors both for specific one-off projects and for potential multi-year funding to support a larger experiential learning effort at UWinnipeg. 
  • Cultivates partnerships between departments and administrative units inside the University, and with community organizations, public agencies, and the private sector, to support and grow experiential learning and other key initiatives at UWinnipeg
  • Speak to and champion the interests of broad experiential learning priorities during strategic discussions with EPP, APP, OPP, Senate, and the Board of Regents
  • Monitor the implementation of institutional commitments related to experiential learning and works to address roadblocks and challenges that may arise relative to implementation
  • Provide research summaries and recommendations related to the strategic direction of experiential learning at the University
  • Develop and maintain web resources in support of faculty-led experiential learning initiatives
  • Plan and organize skill-sharing and skill-building events for faculty, students and community members
  • Organize celebration and recognition events for experiential education
  • Ensure risk management measures and processes are followed to satisfy compliance with internal and external best practices, policies and laws
  • Develop and perform program assessments and evaluations as appropriate and communicate results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Work with Legal Counsel and external partners to broker new agreements between community agencies and experiential education programs if/when required
  • Foster & develop community partnerships for student placements and act as a liaison with community partners. Perform site visits, ensure ongoing communication between sites and the University, and respond to evaluations and feedback to ensure mutual benefit for host sites and students
  • Recruit and interview students interested in participating in Experiential Learning and support them from initial contact to final evaluation
  • Facilitate appropriate training on service-learning, risk management, and ethics in community engagement
  • Review and provide feedback on non-discipline-related student work, including learning objectives and reflection papers
  • Responsible for monitoring a basic budget and will also be asked to work to grow the budget for experiential learning at UWinnipeg through partnership development and fundraising
  • Develop project plans and budgets, and be responsible for planning, monitoring, and reporting on any grant-funded initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma from a relevant discipline (community development, education, political economy)
  • Preference will be given to an individual with a master’s degree
  • 3-5 years of related experience required
  • Previous work in the post-secondary environment preferred
  • Experiential education programming required
  • Ability to implement change and coach a wide variety of colleagues required
  • Must have a strong understanding of the pedagogy and practice of experiential education, including learning outcomes and assessment
  • Must have a strong understanding of program evaluation and assessment practices
  • Must have an understanding of ethical and sustainability issues in community-based experiential education programs, and how to mitigate these issues
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Must have proven analytical ability & critical thinking skills, and ability to mentor students in developing the same
  • Sound risk management skills
  • Must be able to work effectively with a wide range of personalities and with students of diverse educational, age, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • Must be able to reason through problems, issues and scenarios, to a sound conclusion
  • Must be a self-starter who can work under minimum supervision
  • Must be tactful and diplomatic and demonstrate the ability to work with/build consensus among diverse audiences (students, community partners, faculty)
  • Must develop a peer network outside of the institution to assist with maintaining current knowledge base in functional areas
  • Ability to develop project and funding proposals required
