The Seven Oaks Settlement Worker (SW) provides support to refugee and immigrant newcomers who are settling primarily into the Seven Oaks community. The SW reports directly to the Seven Oaks Adult Learning Centre and Immigrant Services and works cooperatively to support all of their programming goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify, welcome and support immigrants and refugees moving into or residing in the area by conducting comprehensive needs assessments and providing accurate information and relevant referral services  
  • Connect with service providers, agencies, schools, and other stake-holders on an on-going basis to determine current resources, programs, and available services for newcomers
  • Contribute to program development through ongoing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.  This includes identifying gaps in services and creatively working within a team to meet these needs, under the direction of the Program Manager
  • Coordinate, develop, and help to facilitate community meetings, events, presentations and workshops
  • Provide monthly report on activities and expenditures. Keep accurate, confidential data of clients and financials.  
  • Attending team meetings to plan, share resources and coordinate activities, and other community meetings as required

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Understanding of the immigrant experience including an awareness of settlement issues and an ability to work within a cross-cultural perspective
  • Knowledge of programs, resources, and services available to newcomer and established Canadians
  • Experience working with clients in need, including crisis counselling
  • Experience and knowledge of Manitoba’s employment market, including building resumes, interview skills and Canadian workplace culture.
  • Must have the ability to work on a team as well as in unsupervised situations
  • Experience working with immigrant adults and families in a supportive role is an asset
  • Ability to work closely and collaborate with professionals in service providing systems and agencies
  • Experience with event and program planning an asset.
  • High school graduate; post-secondary education in a related field preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to work with the Microsoft office suite (publisher, outlook and excel) required
  • Experience with iCARE data entry and record keeping an asset
  • Child Abuse Registry  clearance and a Criminal Record Check are conditions of employment
  • A valid driver’s licence and a vehicle is a requirement.

Hours of Work

  • Two 0.75 EFT positions, 28.125 hours/week- flexible hours that includes evenings and occasionally weekends

Salary: 

  • $18.91-$21.78/ hour
  • This is a permanent position pending ongoing CIC funding
