East Scarborough Storefront, a project on the Tides Canada shared platform, is a unique community organization in the inner suburban neighbourhood of Kingston Galloway/Orton Park (KGO).  The Storefront is a pioneer in developing the Connected Community Approach to community development; this means that at The Storefront our main focus is to leverage the power of collaboration to support people and build community. Storefront staff act as a bridge, catalyst and facilitator between and among community members, services and resources.

Preamble

Beginning in 2016, the East Scarborough Storefront will be going through a transition.  For the next three years, The Storefront will be recreating itself to evolve into a combination neighbourhood based community development organization and a teaching organization that goes beyond neighbourhood boundaries to share the Connected Community Approach.

The current Director will transition into the role of Principal, retaining overall strategic oversight, and focusing primarily on developing Storefront’s evaluation framework and spearheading the sharing and teaching part of our work.

The Storefront is seeking an Interim Director who will be responsible for Storefront’s neighbourhood work, and operational decision making as it affects The Storefront’s work to support the community of KGO.

During this three year transition period, the Principal, Director, Steering Committee and staff will work together to determine the best long term organizational structure that will support both The Storefront’s neighbourhood and teaching roles. 

The Position

The Interim Director will plan for and lead The Storefront staff team to execute innovative and effective community building strategies in Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park using the Connected Community Approach.

Reporting to the Principal, the Interim Director facilitates effective collaboration, provides direction, guidance and supervision to a strong staff team of 25, facilitates good communication among staff and multiple partners, develops funding plans and proposals, manages the organization’s governance and administrative functions, and structures for a wide range of community initiatives.

The Interim Director helps support the staff and Steering Committee through the three-year transitional period, utilizing effective change management strategies and keeping activities integrated, pro-active and focused on the neighbourhood through a time of growth and change.

The Principal and the Director will work closely together to ensure that as The Storefront’s work grows, it continues to be grounded in the community and guided by the organization’s core values and principles.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will be passionate about community development and excited about playing a lead role in pioneering the Connected Community Approach in the East Scarborough neighbourhood of Kingston Galloway /Orton Park.  With demonstrated ability to link ideas, people and processes, the successful candidate will excel at using a network approach for inclusive community building.

The Interim Director at The Storefront will have 5-10 years of leadership and organizational management experience and related education from any one of a wide range of disciplines, including community development, international development, urban planning, social services or economic development.

Effective written and oral communication skills coupled with the ability to facilitate effective decision making processes and problem solving discussions will also be critical in this role.  The successful candidate will have a proven record of successful funding applications and fundraising efforts, and a keen eye for detail, while retaining a big picture perspective.

Above all, the successful candidate will be respectful, empathic and will value the contribution to the community of each person and organization within it.
