Senior Facilitator – Community Development Institute
(Full-time, Term, 1 Year)
The Community Development Institute (CDI) at the University of Northern British Columbia seeks an experienced manager for its community development program. The purpose of this work is to create strong and resilient communities, and informed and innovative leaders, prepared to take advantage of new opportunities in the global economy.
Purpose:
Reporting to the Associate Director of the Community Development Institute the Senior Facilitator will lead and manage the strategic development and evolution of the CDI community development programs. This role will be responsible for ensuring the CDI’s community development program anticipates and responds to the needs related to community and economic transformation and the associated research and teaching in these communities.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Associate Director of the Community Development Institute, the position will be responsible for:
- Providing leadership in the strategic development and evolution of the CDI’s community development program, ensuring that it responds to needs in the area of community and economic transformation.
- Develop, implement, and monitor multi-year and annual plans and budgets that include revenue (e.g. grants and contracts) and expenditures (e.g. staffing, student internships, operations).
- Managing community development projects ensuring the delivery of high quality results on time and within budget.
- Convene and facilitate inclusive multi-party, multi-community dialogue, planning, and negotiations that are respectful and lead to positive and mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Leading projects and research to provide data and information to communities that can be used to assess, plan, direct, and manage community change efforts; including survey design, administration, and data analysis; focus group and interview design, administration, and data analysis; literature reviews; and best practice surveys.
- Developing and managing complex and nuanced relationships with, and engaging in projects, stakeholders involved in community development, including community organizations, business, industry, and all levels of government.
- Engage appropriate partners and resources in the project to support strategy development and implementation, including UNBC faculty, staff, and students; funding agencies; government; and investors.
- Hiring and supervising community development staff and research assistants.
- Working with other members of the CDI team to proactively identify emerging trends and issues in communities.
- Providing leadership and input to organizational development initiatives at the CDI.
Qualifications:
This position requires a Master’s Degree in a related field, as well as 10 years of related experience, including 8 years of management and supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
The ideal candidate will have the following background and competencies:
- Experience in community, economic, and regional development, including multi-party and multi-community dialogue, planning, and negotiation.
- Experience in creating community and organizational change.
- Experience with community-based research, including qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
- Knowledge and understanding of the legislative, political, social, and economic context in which the community development program operates.
- Proven ability to generate revenue and to be entrepreneurial.
- Superior facilitation, conflict management, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated experience in working with rural and small town communities.
- Demonstrated experience in working with Aboriginal groups and First Nations communities.
- Excellent organizational leadership skills, including supervisory skills.
- Demonstrated ability to follow through on initiatives.
- Exceptional ability to communicate ideas and information in a clear, concise fashion, both orally and in writing.
- Working knowledge of technology and how to leverage technology in support of the community development program.
- A proven track record of successful project management.
Salary:
The compensation for this position is commensurate on experience. The term appointment is based on project funding secured for one year and may be extended conditional on success of the project, performance, and ongoing funding.
