South Vancouver Island Economic Development Association (SVIEDA) is a new not-for-profit society with a mandate to facilitate and promote the development of a strong, diversified economy in Southern Vancouver Island through working collaboratively across 13 jurisdictional boundaries. Fundamental to SVIEDA’s success are win-win partnerships between public and private sectors and across political boundaries and industries.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
We have a rare opportunity for an Economic Development Officer (EDO) to be directly involved in the economic growth of the South Vancouver Island Region (the Region). Specifically, the EDO will work with economic development partners in Southern Vancouver Island including First Nations, municipal economic development staff and agents, private businesses, post-secondary institutions, and with industry associations such as Tourism Victoria and Victoria Advanced Technology Council (VIATeC).
Reporting to the Executive Director, the EDO conducts research, builds solid client relationships, facilitates stakeholders on issues and opportunities, and develops policies and strategies; plus oversees projects that serve to attract and build greater business and economic activity in targeted sectors within the Region. The EDO will also have responsibility for project finances and will report through the Executive Director to funding authorities on progress and deliverables.
The EDO will work collegially with other SVIEDA staff to develop differentiated strategies for job creation and other economic growth and diversification in targeted sectors; and will work to implement partnership opportunities in the Region. This position also helps implement and tracks funding for innovation and initiatives in commercialization, entrepreneurship, social enterprises and clean technology.
Qualified candidates will bring a university degree in commerce, economics or business/business administration or public administration; or an equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience. Candidates will also bring a minimum of five years recent, related business experience, ideally in non-profit sector organizations and/or in an economic development organization, business, or equivalent. Ideally, we are looking for people with experience working with municipalities and with First Nations.
