Nature Manitoba is seeking to hire a Program Assistant for Bridging the Gap. The contract is based out of Winnipeg and will require approximately 35 work hours from May to the beginning of July (dependent on completion of duties) with the possibility of extension. The position requires travel to various schools throughout Winnipeg (predominantly within the inner-city). Mileage is reimbursed.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Bridging the Gap (BTG) is a unique, culturally relevant non-formal, science-based environmental education (EE) program for grade four, inner-city youth. In the Spring, Bridging The Gap offers assistance to teachers in the creation of school yard gardens and delivery of associated curriculum.

DUTIES:

Reporting to the Bridging the Gap Program Manager, the role of the Program Assistant is to assist in delivering environmental education programming to several Grade 4 classrooms located primarily within Winnipeg's inner-city:

  • Assist in the coordination of school programs, including: scheduling; assembling supplies; responding to enquiries; purchasing
  • Work with students and teachers to prepare gardens (designing garden layout; weeding, etc.)
  • Assist students with planting seeds, transplanting seedlings and watering
  • Deliver environmental education programming
  • Track program participation and other relevant information for future reporting
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must be 15-29 years of age
  • Experience working with children and youth, low-income neighbourhood youth in particular (Child abuse registry check and criminal records check are required before position begins.)
  • Some post-secondary education in environmental studies, ecology, nutrition, indigenous studies, teaching or other relevant field
  • Knowledge or interest in organic gardening and sustainable food systems
  • Knowledge or interest in indigenous plants and insects, vegetables, common weeds, companion planting
  • Enthusiastic with excellent communication skills
  • Organized and flexible
  • Culturally sensitive
  • Physically fit and capable of manual labour
  • Willingness to work outdoors
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle an asset
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR an asset

Total Contract Wage: $5,000
