Wahkohotowin is a Cree word that means kinship or the state of being related. Wahkohtowin-Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a five-year project funded by the National Crime Prevention Centre under the Ministry of Public Security. The project will implement a new comprehensive model of family based outreach in Winnipeg. Wahkotowin-SFP is a 14-week, curriculum-based program that engages youth who are facing systemic challenges and barriers between the ages 11-17 along with their families. This initiative involves and supports the entire family in developing skills that will enhance parenting skills and empathy and promote effective parenting styles. The program builds decision-making and life skills in youth, including: stress management, conflict resolution, refusal skills, and empathy. It strengthens family bonds and promotes positive communication and the ability to jointly solve problems.
The Wahkohtowin-SFP Project Manager will be responsible for coordinating the project that will be implemented through four different agencies. The project will be hosted at Ka Ni Kanichihk. The partners include: N’dinawe, the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM), Spence Neighbourhood Association, and the University of Manitoba. Each community agency will manage its own staff (Site Coordinators and Parent and Youth Group Leaders). Reporting to, and supervised by, the Steering Committee and Lead Researcher, the Project Manager’s role will be to ensure the fidelity of the Strengthening Families project, to support the Site Coordinators, and to provide creative leadership, mentorship and support to the full staff team (including contract staff).
Qualifications:
- Detail oriented, highly organized, and self-motivated individual
- Undergraduate degree and three (3) years’ experience working in culturally diverse inner-city community; (or an equivalent combination of education and experiences)
- Proven expertise in applying an anti-oppressive framework, and demonstrated cultural competence
- Experience with complicated multi-million dollar project budget administration and program and case management
- Strong financial and project report writing skills
- Experience in program management, coordination, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of program related objectives and deliverables
- Advanced social networking and website management skills
- Stellar verbal, interviewing, and presentation skills
- Intimate knowledge of Winnipeg’s Central and North End communities
- Reliable transportation
- Highly effective task prioritization, multi-tasking, and time management skills
- Proven team player who demonstrates flexibility and adaptability
- Must provide a clear Criminal Record with vulnerable sector completed and Child Abuse Registry check
Specific Job Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with and under the supervision of the project Steering Committee and Lead Researcher, and along with the evaluation team to ensure faithful compliance with the SFP and National Crime Prevention Centre protocols; while contributing to project delivery, data collection, and project evaluation
- Study, and be conversant on, all existing program documents and relevant peer-reviewed research articles
- Maintain the project database with weekly updates, ensuring agency consistency in reporting
- Meet deadlines for the submission of required reports with and to the Lead Researcher and to the National Crime Prevention Centre
- Manage the Wahkohtowin-SFP site budgets and program expenses, monitoring site budgets to ensure program compliance
- Manage the youth and family referral process, administering the risk-assessment tool and directing potential participants to their respective Site Coordinators and delivery sites
- Set up and organize the weekly transportation schedule for participating families with Site Coordinators
- Set up and organize the weekly catering schedule with Site Coordinators
- Coordinate activities of the Wahkohtowin-SFP Coordinators and Facilitators including: organizing weekly site coordinators’ meetings and regular SFP Steering Committee meetings (drafting agendas and preparing handouts), facilitating the meetings, writing and distributing minutes and other materials, sharing information and keeping lines of communication open with team members as appropriate
- Organize cultural events and incorporate the participation of Elders and other cultural leaders
- Work with parent leaders to ensure their involvement and input in all Wahkohtowin-SFP activities
- Engage participants via social networking or other popular means, and assist with the development and upkeep of a Winnipeg Circle of Influence-SFP website
- Keep Winnipeg Circle of Influence-SFP supporters and others informed of Program happenings and accomplishments via a quarterly electronic newsletter
- Assist with fundraising activities, and revise promotional materials as needed
- Serve on community task forces, coalitions, committees, etc. as a Wahkohtowin-Strengthening Families Program representative
- Develop relationships with key family, child and youth agencies along with other interested institutions.
