Food Matters Manitoba is seeking a Northern Program Intern for an internship from July 11, 2016 to January 27th, 2017. The Northern Program Intern will work to support programs in 13 northern communities by assisting with logistics, tool and resource development, and assisting community partners.

This Northern Program Internship is offered as part of Food Matters Manitoba’s Good Food Internship Program and is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada.

Internships pay $16 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay) for 37.5 hours per week.

Responsibilities

The Northern Program Intern will work with the Northern and Indigenous Program team to support:

  • Coordinate events and workshops for participants in northern Manitoba
  • Assist communities with their food activities this summer including gardening, traditional food skills, and livestock
  • Provide support to community champions and community contacts
  • Provide logistical support for staff travel and public events in northern Manitoba
  • Organize the shipment of resources and materials
  • Assist in the evaluation of project results
  • Facilitate educational opportunities for northern program participants
  • Develop partnerships to support project implementation
  • Create resources and toolkits that contribute to FMM’s northern programs
  • Other duties as assigned

About You

  • Knowledge of food security and community development
  • Strong understanding of the lives of Indigenous peoples, communities, food and health
  • A passion for and strong understanding of at least one of the following: nutrition, hunting or other traditional food skills, outdoor education, Cree language, social enterprise, or gardening
  • Experience in community development
  • Experience working in northern and Indigenous communities considered an asset
  • High level of organization with proven attention to detail
  • Ability to self-motivate and work as a team player
  • Ability to multitask effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle would be an asset.

Internship Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) as of July 11, 2016
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee status has been conferred
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
  • Not receiving Employment Insurance benefits
