Ontario's Social Enterprise Demonstration Fund Issues $2m Call for Proposals
 The Government of Ontario is launching a second $2-million round of the Social Enterprise Demonstration Fund (SEDF) as part of Ontario’s Social Enterprise Strategy 2016 - 2021. This round will support the development of financially sustainable and scalable  social enterprises by addressing key challenges faced by social enterprises, such as access to capital.

Building a Vibrant Social Enterprise Landscape: Lessons from Scotland
 In early September, a pan-Canadian group of social enterprise stakeholders visited Scotland to tour the landscape. Hosted by Community Enterprise in Scotland, the largest third sector business support provider in Scotland, the group met with government representatives, intermediaries, and a diverse mix of social enterprises. This webinar, with presentations from David LePage, Nabeel Ahmed, and Darcy Penner, will cover key findings from the tour and share reflections for the continued evolution of the social enterprise landscape in Canada.

Volunteers Sought for Women's Economic Council Technical Working Group
 CCEDNet member, the Women’s Economic Council (WEC), is looking for a few good women and men to participate in a virtual, national Technical Working Group. Volunteers will help WEC develop some of the technical specifications for WEC’s new online portal.

New Program Promotes the Expansion of Collective Enterprises in Ontario
Up to twenty-five Francophone and bilingual collective businesses in Ontario will be eligible to receive a grant to improve their services thanks to a partnership between the Conseil de la coopération de l'Ontario (CCO), a member of the Canadian CED Network, and Ontario Centres of Excellence under the Ontario Social Impact Vouchers' program.

New Report Puts Forward a Model to Support Manitoba-based Social Enterprises to Seize Opportunities

There is growing consensus across the political spectrum that it is more cost effective to invest in preventing social problems, before crisis occurs, than it is to invest in addressing the problem further down the road. However, significant barriers prevent this from happening. The report, completed by Purpose Capital, addresses these barriers while presenting a model for making upstream investments in human services through a publicly-financed, pay-for-success investment fund, specifically designed to invest in innovative, preventive initiatives.

Community economic development is not just a matter of helping some households to get jobs and pay their bills. Done thoughtfully, it’s about shifting the location of economic power. As Gar Alperovitz writes, "One part of linking project-based work to systemic change efforts must involve creating institutions of democratized ownership of wealth (rather than elite individual ownership)—institutions that can generate revenue, provide jobs, and build up an independent economic base for the community over time."

In October 2015, Dina Graser was contracted to research how community benefits could produce meaningful change for low-income communities, and to make practical recommendations as how to best advance the field in Ontario.

Business Vitality Initiative Community Handbook 
The Business Vitality Initiative process and the content in this toolkit were developed by and remain the intellectual property of the Centre for Innovative and Entrepreneurial Leadership (CIEL). Through a dynamic partnership between CIEL and the Community Economic Development and Employability Corporation (CEDEC), a member of the Canadian CED Network, this bilingual community handbook is a tool which will be used to enhance business vitality in Quebec and provide opportunity for the English-speaking and broader community to work together.

Beyond Economic Survival: 97 Ways Small Communities Can Thrive
 Whatever "quality of life" means, does your community have a good enough supply of it to attract new citizens with varying interests, retain its existing citizens, and inspire them all? CIEL's Community Vitality Initiative (CVI) measures community leaders' and citizens' perceptions about the quality of life in their community and compares the scores to those from other communities using a unique graphic index (the Community Vitality Index).
