The Nourish and Develop Foundation (TNDF) is a charitable non-profit organization located in Cannington, Ontario (north Durham Region). TNDF provides leadership in enhancing local food security and promoting self-reliance, all part of its poverty reduction strategy. TNDF is seeking an experienced and creative individual who will oversee our Local Food and Community Kitchen program and clients’ engagement strategy. The work could include, but not limited to, coordinating and facilitating weekly food skills kitchen activities that may include food training, preserving, food demonstration workshops, community lunches, cooking healthy meals, and sessions that support individual’s food skills and healthy eating. The animator will involve and motivate low-income people, aiming to promote inclusion, encourage cultural pride and knowledge sharing as we build self-reliance and independence in program participants.
The position hours are 26 hours/week (four 6.5 hrs days) with an initial compensation of $18-20 per hour plus benefits after successful completion an employment period. We are willing to consider special arrangement (compensation/time) for the right candidate with the best potential. The employment position can be formalized as an independent contractor (invoice us) or as an employee contract agreement.
Main Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and deliver strategies to promote and enhance local food knowledge and skills
- Coordinate and facilitate food skills programming for low-income participants
- Coordinate food-related workshops that include guest facilitators per program plans
- Implement soup lunches in Cannington and local areas as part of the local food programming
- Outreach and keep participants engaged, motivated, and learning, as agreed upon in program plans
- Assist with food social enterprise exploration to promote local food and offer on-the-job training
- Coordinate, implement and promote of drop-in food programming in the community kitchen
- Develop and implement plans to outreach and engage low-income people in planned food programming
- Coordinate practical food skill initiatives where people can learn to cook, preserve, and prepare food
- Implement sessions that promote and use simple, nutritious and accessible local food ingredients
- Coordinate cooking demonstrations, preserving, or other food-related educational workshops
- Ensure a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment for people (mostly low income) to
- Develop awareness of healthy food and skills in the preparation of food that is nutritious and delicious
- Research and development programs that consider best practice and gets buy-in from clients/people
- Monitor and evaluate local food program’s effectiveness and success and periodically report on it
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Proven work experience delivering food-related training and/or food skills development sessions
- Relevant experience delivering programming for low-income and/or people with special needs
- Knowledge in planning and executing successful (food) educational/learning programs for adults
- Familiarity with traditional and non-traditional teaching methods (mentoring, coaching, simulations)
- Excellent communication, leadership skills, ability to plan, multi-task and manage time effectively
- Ability to work and empathize with both individuals and groups experiencing poverty and isolation
- Creative with strong problem-solving skills and self-motivated individual with ability to work as a team
