A panel on the future of Alberta’s economy…
What significance will co-operative businesses have in shaping Alberta’s economy? How will the co-op model be applied in the future, and where will existing co-ops innovate and compete?
We’re going to explore the policy environment, opportunities for economic diversification, and more with Tom Mansfield, Executive Director Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, Economic Development and Trade, and representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Parks. We’ll hear from sector leaders about how co-operatives are adapting from Garth Warner, President and CEO of Alberta’s largest financial co-operative, Servus Credit Union and Ken Keelor, CEO of one of the largest retail co-operatives in North America, Calgary Co-op. What does it take to lead a people-powered organization in a profit-driven world, and how to leverage both in order to grow and remain relevant.
There’ll also be plenty of time for you to discuss strategies and talk about challenges and innovations with other people in the co-operative movement.

Make Networking Count: More than Coffee and Lunch
When we last brought co-op and credit union leaders together, 93% of guests met valuable new connections and had success networking. This event is not just about expert advice and timely information, it’s also about building strategic alliances across the province to strengthen co-operatives,better respond to members and answer the future needs of Albertans.
The Summit of Co-operative Leaders is a little different than our traditional Gathering of Alberta Co-operatives. This Summit allows our co-op sector the chance to meet with senior bureaucrats within the provincial government, economic development officers from municipal governments, and like-minded allies who understand that growing our economy also means strengthening our communities.
Passing the Torch: Strategies to Prepare Alberta Co-operatives for the Challenges Ahead
Shauna Feth of the Alberta Business Family Institute will explain the key areas of succession planning to effectively engage the next generation of directors, managers, members. Shauna’s presentation will be followed by a facilitated discussion and more meaningful networking for sector leaders. Attendees will learn about the core elements of succession planning, “future-proofing” and the strategies to ensure co-operatives are in good hands in the next 5 and 10 years.
The main outcome of the session is that sector-leaders are aware of core succession components, and receive feedback and input from the next generation of co-op employees.
