Who We Are:
Established in 2001, EMBERS mission is to create economic and employment opportunities for people living on low incomes who face barriers to employment. We help people rediscover hope and self-sufficiency through the power of work. EMBERS began its services by offering self-employment training programs for budding entrepreneurs, and since then, has grown to offer employment services to over 1000 people annually who live in Vancouver’s inner city through its temporary staffing social enterprise.
EMBERS Eastside Works – A Low-Barrier Income Generation Hub:
Eastside Works is an income generation hub opening at 57 East Hastings St. in the heart of the Downtown Eastside. Eastside Works will be a space for people to find employment opportunities anywhere along the Income Generation Continuum, provide training, support local entrepreneurs and social enterprises. Eastside Works recognizes that not all residents are ready to enter the formal labour market or have the capacity to work standard full and part positions. Eastside Works exists to support residents to generate income in manner that best meets their current situation and will encourage them to move along the Income Generation Continuum where and when possible.
The Position:
We are currently looking for a full-time Resource Facilitator for Eastside Works who will be responsible for the day to day operations of the facility including creating a welcoming and productive environment for new service users. The Resource Facilitator will offer creative and non-traditional assessment services that identify user’s unique capacity to generate income and refer users to relevant training programs. The Resource Facilitator will also support the Supervisor in the daily operations of Eastside Works.
The approach of Eastside Works is fundamentally different from existing government-mandated employment services because the goal of Eastside Works is not necessarily to get people off of income assistance and into full-time work. The goal is to help people meet their basic needs using innovative methods working in the informal economy to ultimately improve the lives of the many vulnerable in this community.
Responsibilities:
- Be the primary front-line ambassador for Eastside Works with new service users and community members
- Provide a thorough assessment and intake of community members
- Assisting in moving community members along the income generation continuum should they choose to do so
- Work with Business Developer to match suitable users to income generation opportunities
- Manage payments and invoicing
- Manage programs database, ensuring that community resources, opportunities and potential referrals are relevant and current
- Support the Eastside Work’s reporting and evaluation criteria by recording and tracking user data and other relevant metrics
- Coordinate Eastside Works’ programming with relevant Eastside Works staff members and community partners
- Support the Business Developer maintain strong relationships with employers and other stakeholders
- Other duties as required
Requirements:
- 1 to 3 years experience working in a front-line capacity serving individuals with barriers
- Demonstrated knowledge of employment and training resources and an understanding of systemic barriers to employment
- Experience working with unemployed, underemployed, homeless and marginally housed individuals, and knowledge of the challenges facing individuals with significant barriers to entering the labour market residing in the DTES or similar community
- Computer literacy utilizing MS Office applications with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software applications
- Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in community services core competencies including customer service, communications, team work, initiative, and accountability, and flexibility/adaptability
- Strong interpersonal, employment coaching, negotiation and mediation
- Education/training in counseling or equivalent experience working with individuals with barriers
- Working knowledge of programs and services offered in the DTES
- Experience working in employment services will be considered an asset but not a requirement

- Must flexible, responsive and an ‘out of the box’ thinker as this is an innovative pilot project
- Strong belief in the capacity of all residents to find fulfilling ways of generating income and living full and rewarding lives
Compensation:
- This is a 6 month contract position with an excellent possibility for an extension
- Salary is $42K per annum which translates to $21K for 6 months
- A competitive benefits package will also be available after 3 months
