Job Title: Bilingual Summer Interpreter
Supervisor: Director of Education
Hours of Work: Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 4:30 with a rotation of some evenings and weekends
Dates: April 30– August 17
Job Summary:
As a member of the Education Team, the Bilingual Summer Interpreter will assist in the delivery of school, youth, and public educations programs, with a special emphasis on French programming. This Interpreter will play a unique role in the building of FortWhyte Alive’s French services infrastructure. The position entails the utilization of leadership, public relations and communication skills and the acquisition and application of specific environmental-related knowledge in a public education role.
Principal Tasks:
1. Program Delivery (75%)
- Shadow different interpreters to learn delivery techniques, styles and program content
- Deliver educational programs for school/youth and public groups
- Assist in coordination of school programs, including assembling program supplies, preparing schedules, and assisting volunteer interpreters
- Participate in seasonal training programs for volunteer and staff interpreters
- Mentor volunteer interpreters
- Assist in planning and delivery of Day Camp programs for ages 4 and 5 (Kinder Camp)
2. Research and Writing (20%)
- Assist with special projects related to extending French services
- Revise and evaluate French school programs in conjunction with the Director of Education (meeting Manitoba curriculum standards)
- Revise French school program evaluation forms as needed
- Work with Bilingual Heritage Interpreter to market French programs to teachers and to potential French-speaking volunteer interpreters
3. Other duties as assigned (5%)
Basic Hiring Criteria:
- University/college student working towards a degree/diploma in education, recreation, science or tourism
- Ability to speak French fluently
- Proven experience working with children (a child abuse registry check and criminal records check are required before position begins)
- Knowledge of Manitoba social and natural history an asset
- Translation experience an asset
- Indigenous heritage (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) an asset
- Class 4 Driver’s Licence an asset
- Certification in First Aid, CPR, an asset
- Private transportation to FWA (no bus service available)
