The Harvest Moon Society (HMS) vision is a world in which healthy land and communities are celebrated by all, leading to equitable food systems, a sense of place, and care for the environment now and in generations to come. The mission is to develop a learning center that works toward strengthening and building linkages between urban and rural areas, empowering communities while creating strategies and infrastructure to sustain community and environment.
JOB SUMMARY
The Land Based Learning Interpreter is a full-time position from May to August, pending funding. The applicant will work with the HMS Coordinator and dedicated volunteers. Job tasks include planning and coordinating educational field trips for children and youth, assisting with day camps, and assisting with the planning of sustainable agriculture workshops.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Facilitate outdoor, experiential learning activities for school field trips, youth agency visits, and university courses.
- Assist with developing cross-curricular sustainability education packages for teachers that make use of the on-site learning infrastructure, including a greenhouse and gardens, water conservation projects and interpretive nature trail.
- Assist with preparing outlines, handouts, visual aides and lesson plans that meet the learning outcomes of the Manitoba curriculum.
- Prepare, collect and analyze exit slips and surveys to evaluate the success of the activities and programs.
- Enhance the presence of indigenous teachings and opportunities for cultural appreciation in Harvest Moon Society programs.
- Assist with planning the Eco-Challenge, a 1-day outdoor education event for local junior high students that highlights environmental protection.
- Lead activities at day camps for children aged 7 to 11 and youth aged 12 to 15.
- Create blog posts, newsletter articles and other promotional materials, highlighting the sustainable education programs at the Harvest Moon Learning Centre.
- Consult with local experts and volunteers to develop learning tools that transmit the local history of the region, from stories of historical and contemporary life in rural Manitoba, to transformations in agricultural practices, as well as the stewardship and conservation of natural resources.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong communication skills and experience leading activities to a variety of ages and educational levels
- Able to work independently and solve problems resourcefully
- Knowledge of environmental sustainability and food security issues
REQUIREMENTS
- Between the ages of 15-30
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred
- Eligible to work in Canada
- Priority will be given to applicants pursuing post-secondary studies in the fields of education, environmental science, geography or related subjects
- Valid driver’s licence and registered vehicle
HOURS & REMUNERATIONS
The Land Based Learning Interpreter will work 35 hours per week at $16/hour, pending funding.
