Spence Neighbourhood Association is looking to fill a 37.5 hour per week Outreach Worker position in our overnight safe space. The outreach worker will work overnight from 11:00pm to 7:00 am and will be responsible for programming and building relationships with youth at the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre by engaging high-risk youth with positive activities, performing risk assessments, providing effective crisis response, connecting them to community resources and social services, and providing them mentorship. The program uses a wraparound mentorship based approach to connecting at risk youth to their culture and community. The outreach worker will also provide outreach to those in need in the community through driving the outreach van during the evenings.
Note- staff are required to work overnights
Primary responsibilities include:
- Mentor and support at-risk youth
- Build relationships with and support youth from the West End of Winnipeg
- Provide crisis support for youth and their families
- Facilitate and support youth in goal development
- Facilitate and support youth in exploration and identification of their own culture
- Facilitate and support youth in exploration of different cultures
- Connect youth to supports and resources in the community
- Address basic needs (safe place, food and clothing) of youth
- Supervise youth completing restorative justice and community service hours
- Complete daily documentation, progress reports, statistics and assessments of youth
- Volunteer and employment support
- Organizing training that supports development for youth
- Connect youth to resources, housing, EIA, mental health and other services to support youth
Desired qualifications:
- Experience working with at-risk inner-city youth and understanding of inner-city issues
- Understanding of barriers that exist for Indigenous and Newcomer youth and their families
- Experience in mentoring or counselling youth
- Understanding of resources available for youth within the inner-city
- Ability to provide strong referrals and create action plans alongside youth in meeting their goals
- Understanding of culture, cultural identities and resources within Winnipeg, specifically for Newcomer and Indigenous youth
- Ability to work in times of crisis and under pressure
- Self-motivated and able to manage a flexible work schedule
- Enjoy working in a team and individually
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Ability to provide a current criminal record check and child abuse registry check
- Drivers license
Assets:
- Relevant education or experience in one on one mentorship, wraparound, social work, community development, inner city studies, or other applicable fields.
- Relevant training including: current First Aid & CPR, ASIST, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Mental Health First Aid, Trauma Informed Care, etc.
- Creativity and ambition
- Experience working with youth involved in gangs
- Experience working with youth with addictions or mental health issues
- Experience working with LGBT2SQ* and other marginalized groups of youth
- Understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice System
- Understanding of Restorative Justice theory and practices
Hours and remuneration:
The Employee agrees to fulfill a 37.5hour work week. SNA agrees to pay $17 per hour for a 37.5 hour work week on a bi-weekly schedule, with hours paid as worked. Required CPP, EI, and tax deductions will be made and employer contributions will be paid. Responsibilities may require flexible hours to be worked (i.e., weekdays, evenings and weekends). However, regular hours will be overnight from 11:00pm to 7:00am
