The Social Research and Demonstration Corporation is a non-profit organization involved in the design, research, and evaluation of social programs and policies. Since 1991, we have been building a base of knowledge and experience about what works in employment, education, health, and social policy. While SRDC is recognized across Canada, and internationally, as a leader in the design, implementation, and evaluation of large-scale demonstration projects, we also conduct program evaluation, impact analysis, and cost-benefit analysis for a wide range of government and non-governmental organizations, in particular those involved in the delivery of services to economically disadvantaged populations.

Position: Research Assistant
Location: SRDC Ottawa office
Duration: Four to eight weeks, from June 1, 2018
Type: Full-time, hourly-paid, temporary assignment

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are seeking a Research Assistant to join our research team working on a project aiming to better understand the challenges related to the provision of specialized services (rehabilitation and mental health/addictions support) for students who attend francophone schools. The successful candidate’s work will be guided by a senior SRDC researcher who will assist in developing his/her research skills and knowledge and provide guidance and advice during the assignment.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for and/or assist with the following tasks:

  • Conducting literature reviews on agencies offering specialized services in the province;
  • Supporting data collection from agencies and ministries involved;
  • Performing data entry and cleaning Excel files; and
  • Extracting data tables relevant to the analysis.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a university program in social sciences (sociology, economics, politics), psychology, public/community health or education sciences;
  • Understanding of public policy research/analysis, evaluation processes and quantitative methods;
  • Organized, self-motivated, and able to work effectively, both independently and as a team member, within tight deadlines;
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft office tools, especially Excel;
  • Strong analytical skills, familiarity/experience with statistical software packages; and
  • Excellent command of oral and written French, good command of oral and written English.
