Food Matters Manitoba is seeking an Intern to support five community gardens in Winnipeg’s North End from June, 2018 to August, 2018. This Internship is offered as part of Food Matters Manitoba’s Good Food Internship Program and is funded by Canada Summer Jobs.

This position pays $11.15 per hour, 30 hours per week for a duration of 8 weeks.

Responsibilities:

• Assist community members with gardening activities including planting, weeding, watering and composting.
• Maintain cleanliness of garden sites by mowing grass around raised beds and boulevards, removing garbage and debris.
• Maintain organization of storage facilities, tools and equipment.
• Provide support with infrastructure repairs, builds, and new projects as needed.
• Develop and facilitate training opportunities that are relevant to community gardeners’ needs.
• Nurture strong relationships with gardeners and community members to enhance project implementation.
• Support fundraising and communications by sharing stories from the community gardens.

About You:

• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and organizational skills.
• Self-motivated and a strong team player.
• A willingness to learn and receive training as needed.
• Volunteer and/or employment experience in gardening and community development is considered an asset.
• Ability to speak Karen is an asset.
• A valid driver’s license is an asset.

Internship Criteria:

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive)
• Registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year with the intention of returning school on a full-time basis during the next academic year
• Enrolled as a student in a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program
• A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee status has been conferred
• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
• Not receiving Employment Insurance benefits
